Computer Monitor says "No Signal"

Hi

We have a desktop computer which until now has been working fine. However today when we turned both the desktop and monitor on, we consistently got the message "no signal" on the monitor and it immediately went on standby. We are therefore unable to use the computer (we do not have an alternative monitor).

We have tried unplugging leads etc, but still no joy. Until today it had been working fine and we have not moved the computer or done anything which may have caused it to stop working.

Anyone any ideas? Obviously want to avoid the expense of taking to a repair shop if it is something simple. The monitor is an Advent 780, and the computer an Advent T11.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • I would say this was more to do with the computer itself and not the monitor as the monitor is stating "no signal" and as you checked the cables being correctly inserted then probably not them, did the computer turn of as usual, did it sound the same (I.e fan sounds and hard drive sounds?)
  • Possible someone has accidentally been pressing the 'F' keys & switched the monitor off.:j

You haven't plugged the screen into the wrong video socket have you?

    Thanks All

We haven't unplugged the screen and been working previously so it can't be in the wrong socket.

In terms of the sound of the computer it was making more noise - not sure if fan or hard drive tho. Is it potentially an expensive issue with the computer?

    I'll check F keys.

    Thanks again....
  • It sounds more like the computer was not POSTing so showed nothing on the screen, this could be any hardware component causing this and would require some testing to find the culprit.

Although as you said it is now working so don't worry too much about it until it happens again, I'm sure myself or many others can run you through the basics of fault finding a pc.

Does our monitor have source selection, eg does it accept input feeds from more than one type of signal - hdmi, rgb, VGA, scart?

If so you just need to reelect the correct source from the menu buttons.

Don't think it has source selection - previously we've just plugged it in and it works. It just seems to have stopped working today...

if the vga/dvi lead is in securely at both ends (reseat it), and it appears to power up and you get nothing on screen at any point (ie no bios screen), it's likely to be video card or motherboard, the former is relatively cheap to replace

check to see if the video card is seated correctly, and fan spinning.

make sure the monitor is set to look on the correct input if it has multiple inputs.

if the machine has onboard graphics too, try the other port, and check bios settings.

  • Sorry just read your original post and it still does not work (some reason I thought it was working now)

If you have tried reseating the leads then as said I would say it is a computer issue not a monitor issue, when you power on the computer and nothing happens do you just press the power button again to turn it off or do you need to turn it off another way?
  • What are you typing this on? If it's a laptop can you plug the screen in to it to see if you get a picture
Nothing to see here, move along.
