My email to Tesco this morning.

"
I was in your store this morning between 10.00 and 10.17 hrs.You had no large bottles of San Pelligreno Water, you had no Rizla liquorice papers, and the self service check out "which only takes debit cards" did not work. Not even your pointless male operative could make it work.I therefore waited at the checkout for 10 minutes until I could escape your store to go to The Cooperative and Lidl to finish my shopping. This is the third time in weeks that you have had an "Out of Stock" of items that I regularly buy and I am coming to the rapid conclusion that you are telling me to go and shop elsewhere.

If you paid half as much attention to your supply chain, and the small details in your Chepstow store as you do to constant promotional activity there would be no problem. But you just don't seem to be able to do it.

I am NOT a happy bunny at all.Especially as I have to pay more for small bottles of water because you have no large ,and extra for petrol to go to The Cooperative for cigarette papers.

Oh and yes my wife is suffering from the aftereffects of chemotherapy hence the water she particularly likes. So as you would say "Every little helps".Not with me it doesn't."

The point here is that OP got it off his chest and told Tesco why he was going elsewhere.

If more people did this, then Tesco would be considerably less complacent.

water- could be popular ...delivery do not happen instantaneously but if its something you require a lot of you could ask customer service to place a customer order for you so you can pick it up

  • Just had a telephone call from Regional Head Office. After saying sorry (as she is told to do) 5 times, she then said that both the water AND the cig.papers were showing in stock.I said ..."well that means that you either have a lousy stock control system or lousy staff or both." She said "I agree Mr Bxxxx"."I said you agree with what ?" - she went very quiet. I then said that if she goes to The Forum on MSE she will see that I am not alone in this point of view. She said "you,ve done that Mr Bxxxx ?" I said "yes".She then said ( r u following this ?) "In that case I will log it with London".

I shall keep you informed of the outcome.....!!!!!

I know at Sainsburys, if we get a delivery with something that is out of stock, its highlighted and we pull off those cases off the rollers and boards (always at the bottom of course!) and put them out straight away.

I'm not too sure if T has a similar thing.

I'm shocked that they bothered to contact you! I don't normally shop at Tesco as I prefer other stores, however, I do have a look in the clothes dept of the larger stores on rare occasions. The last time I went in there I walked out as I couldn't be bothered to wait in the queue. Recently I returned something & had to wait in the queue again, they had the worlds biggest dope serving & she really did make a meal out of serving the few people in the queue. I complained whilst in Tesco to all the people wandering around on the shop floor, I complained when the dopey woman finally served me, & I complained to customer service, finally I emailed when I got home, but I've never heard anything from them. The queues in that dept are an ongoing thing & they loose many customers because of this. I wont be going back to Tesco. Soz had to get that off my chest. Good luck, & I wish your wife well in her treatment. I've been there so I can appreciate the thirst, I usually carry around a bottle of water wherever I go.

It seems to me with all the technology available, that stores should be better at keeping products in stock.

For example, if there are online orders for an item three or four days in advance, and those orders will come from a particular store, the stock orders should reflect that fact that someone wants six 500g packs of organic lamb mince shown on the website as available from that store.

Instead the customer gets a bleated we don't have that in stock when it isn't delivered and asks the store why. ASDA and Tesco are particularly good at this.

At Sainsbury's you used to be able to order things to pick up via customer services - my mother had a weekly order for a particular type of bread. Don't know if they still do this ?

The tills update stock constantly and if the store manager is any good s/he should be making sure stuff is reordered. Also, if you have loyalty cards etc then it should be feasible to work out what your store's regular customers buy regularly cos that will be your core stock. It's not going to take hours for people to do, software can do it.

I suspect that store staff (managers included) aren't clued up on the technology available and that managers mess with stock levels to avoid YS.

But if regular customers can't find what they want they will go elsewhere.
ASDA, Morrisons and Lidl all assured me that my local stores carry organic fresh food - in practice, they don't.

More of us should complain like scrooze247. I was in a huge 24/7 Tesco with my mother during Organic September and it was awash with fresh organic fruit and veg. The following month practically nothing. So the people who tried it were then let down because it hasn't been stocked since.

How many times do supermarkets produce recipe cards and then when you want to buy the ingredients, the store doesn't stock them - Sainsbury's and Waitrose good at this.
  • Have to say that two things stand out in this thread;

Firstly, the tone in the OP in criminal, the individual on the receiving end of your message was not the one at fault and I just find that tone horrendous if you are actually trying to achieve something from this. Surely you acknowledge that the staff of the supermarket in question can only work with systems they are provided with and that they are at the end of the day human beings, just like yourself. Not super heroes or individuals out to ruin your day personally.

Secondly, nice to see a big firm acknowledging the message and paying attention to the public's brand perception when you tell them you've run off ranting to a public forum.

If it is something you are buying regularly why not place a larger order and collect it/get it delivered. For your convenience.

This is by no means the first time this has happened.
    2.
This is NOT a dig at the staff but a absolute criticism of:

    a.Staff selection
    b.Staff training
c.Supervision (or total lack of it on a Saturday morning)
    d.Systems (which obviously don't work)
e.Apathy and HUGE complacency towards the customer
    3.
My experience (by no means unique on this trip to Tesco is a microcosm of the reasons why it has falling revenue, declining profits etc etc)

Let me remind you that other competitors are INCREASING REVENUE AND PROFITS - or don't you even read the news
    anymore ?

They should employ me as a consultant !!
