Hi
Is anyone else having problems with a very slow internet connection with Virgin Media?
We have the 10meg package but it is slower at the moment than years ago when we had dial up. It's been like this for the last two days. I am in Hertfordshire.

Have you tried switching off the computer, unplugging the modem for a few minutes, then reconnecting......wait till the usual lights are on(about a min) thn switching back on the computer.
If no good, I'd ring Virgin and ask them to test the connection from their end. I use this site all the time to check speeds etc.

Thanks Strangled. My son (much better at this stuff than his mum!) unplugged everything as you suggested. It was a bit better but pretty slow really.
I'll try the speedtest if I can do get to it without my connection timing out! It took me ages to get on this site too.0 -
How long have you been having problem ??
Is it slow in evenings ??
Have you called tech support & has an engineer visited to check your connection ??
Monitor & note your broadband speed throughout day.

mines been slow for about 6 weeks. Taking an age to sort out. Even the engineer who came plugged in his lappy and was going really slow. He phoned IT who said it was a network problem, but when i phone up they know nothing about it. Ive been told it must be my laptop on the phone. Funny how it works fine on other people's networks. Just waiting for a modem to be delivered as the set top box and tv are also now having problems. Is v frustrating16/06/16 £11446 30/12/16 £9661.49

I have had my VM 8mb for 8 working days now.
I have reported to VM that the speed is nowhere near the 8mb, and started evidencing it at different times of the day through some of the standard on-line speed tests.
There is a marked difference in the evenings - when it gets really poor.
I understand that BT will be testing and tweaking the line after 10 days usage.
If there is not a significant improvement, then I will need to question the service that is being provided for my hard-earned pennies.
Is anyone aware of the correct complaint routes, prior to a small claims action ?0 -

They tell you before you sign up that
"We'll make sure that you receive the highest broadband speed your phone line can handle, however the actual speed you receive can be affected by factors such as phone line quality or distance from your local exchange. This means you could actually receive up to 4 Mb, 5 Mb or 6 Mb - basically anything up to 8 Mb."0 -

It's running much better today although I'm only getting 1.9 mb on the Broadband Genie speed test. I've run several others and the results are similar. Not much point in paying for 10 mb then0

It depends, do you have a cable connection or an ADSL connection? If you're using fibre optics (cable), then in theory it should be fast!0

Unfortunatley, we have the 10mb Virgin cable connection and over numerous speed tests over a period of 5 months, we have ONCE had the 10mb speed, we have had an average speed of 3.3mb which considering we are paying £35.00 for the privilege of this is appalling. We so far have had 2 new modems, 5 engineers come over to the house, many customer care people totally disbelieving what we tell them. The time we had the 10mb speed was when my OH phoned Virgin up to tell them if things did not improve we would be cancelling the service !! . I understand when people say that its the servers at the other end of the connection who may not have fast speeds, but Virgin/NTL tell us to speed check from companies such as Microsoft, Apple etc. Virgin/NTL also insist that we use MS Internet Explorer for our speed to be faster. We have also tried that - its considerably slower than when we use Firefox or Opera.
We are in the process of firstly getting a BT line, then if the speed on Virgin/NTL does not improve (highly unlikely as if it hasn't improved over 5 months it probably won't improve), we will be changing over to most probably Be. As long as we get a reliable speed (not bothered about 10mb, 6 or 8 on a regular basis would be good), we don't care.0
