What nonsense! Don't you know anything?
Very little, sorry, but we have owned property in the Paphos area since the mid 90's.it is true that part of the Republic of Cyprus is subject to illegal foreign occupation by Turkish soldiers, and for this reason the North is temporarily exempt from EU legislation.
According to Orange, 'Northern Cyprus' is NOT in the EU, which is the only relevant point in this discussion.0 -

In that case, you have absolutely no excuse for your ignorance! You have property in Cyprus and you haven't a clue about the legal/diplomatic situation. Tut Tut! Your "Turkish views" won't go down well with the locals. :eek:
Read and learn:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Cyprusand as this is a discussion about mobile phone use in Cyprus, maybe that's what I was trying to say.

You are quite right that the contractual definition is what is important here. Contracts can re-define things for the purpose of the contract. For example if you buy a European travel insurance policy, they usually define Europe as incuding North African countries with a Mediteraean Coast.0 -

SorryI thought I was talking to someone who used the term 'the Greek part of Cyprus' so was trying to explain it all in 'basic terms' - I know all the details and certainly don't have 'Turkish views'

Unfortunately you are in a sticky situation.
The roaming costs could very easily have come from just background stuff on a smartphone (especially iPhones and Android based phones). Even if he didn't actively access his Facebook/Twitter/e-mail etc.; all of these applications are set to automatically update in the background without any prompting, and the amount of data used will vary. In addition, many applications (cheap ones especially) use network data to advertise - given the amount they suck battery, they appear to use a substantial amount. So any games he might have played while there could have contributed.
If its an iPhone (or if he uses an app for it regardless of the platform) then messages can be sent over data. Its quite possible he does this while in the UK to save the inclusive text allowance.And I very much hope that he didn't use any GPS while there; the maps aren't stored on the phone, they're downloaded as you go.
With other networks iPhones (don't know about Android) have data roaming off by default; unfortunately Orange's merger with T-Mobile recently meant that for a time at least people would get better service if they switched it on.
When did he go? Have you checked to make sure that this is all of the charges? Charges from overseas (especially data) can be rather slow in appearing on your bill, and charges from different carriers can take longer than others. If he moved around then its possible he connected to towers from different providers (I haven't checked what's available btw, just before anyone comes to correct me on available providers) and more charges could be due to come. I sincerely hope not; but you should probably be aware.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
<pedant mode>
You mean the Greek speaking 'Republic of Cyprus'
Pedant mode - best avoided in case someone else starts using <super pedant mode>.What nonsense! Don't you know anything?
I thought everyone knew that The Republic of Cyprus (legally) corresponds to the whole island and that the whole of Cyprus joined the EU in 2004.
Only Turkey recognises the North of Cyprus as being a separate entity. Are you Turkish then? Are you trying to make some sort of political point here?
