Why did you suddenly need two new tyres?

I MOT'd a car about 4 years back and failed on the exhaust but all the tyres passed. Went to autospeed who had an exhaust in stock. They did a *free* tyre check and told me I needed three new ones, one of which was dangerous. The word off featured in my reply.

Never believe these people when they tell you you need new tyres but have a look yourself.

I expect I've been conned, must have seen an opportunity when a single female landed at the garage with a snapped exhaust!!Although I've had the car 3 years and its never had any new tyres so perhaps its genuine.
Hoping to have some savings this month - August update due shortly!!

Thanks for coming back to post. It's great to see people making progress, and I've just re-read all of your thread. You're making fantastic progress! Inspiring stuff.

You mention that you use your Airmiles card to pay for your grocery shopping and pay it off in full each month. Have you considered using a cashback credit card (see Martin's updated article). This could earn you more.

Although, if you are doing Old Style budgeting on your grocery shopping, avoid AMEX as it won't be accepted in the likes of Lidl or Aldi.

Another place you may get inspiration from is Old Style's monthly pin money challenge. This seems to work really well for people as they can 'see' money saved rather than lose sight of the small pieces of budgeting they do from day to day.

Keep posting, and keep at it. You're doing great!

    Cheers

    August Update

    Capital One - £12142- £364 per month - 0% until August 2006

    Intelligent Finance - £8972 - £179 per month - 0% until February 2006

......and now the exciting bit.............£500 in my savings account!!

My plan is to keep paying minimum payment and put what savings I can in the high interest account (and DON'T touch it), then pay all my savings off the IF card in January, transfer as much as I can to the Capital One cos its 0% for BTs for the whole 18 months. Then if anything left on IF hopefully get another 0% card to keep the pressure off a little longer while I still work on paying £1000 per month off the debt.

I'm really pleased about the savings, all that cost cutting has finally paid off - and I've given my best friend the cash card so I can't withdraw the money until Jan!!

  • well done!!! :j It's great that you have your finanace's in order. From reading your first post you have been so positive and have had some encouraging advice along the way. It has been a very interesting post and very similar to my situation, everything you have done I have done too, (thanks to mse site of course). Keep posting and encourage others who think they are in deep trouble, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Keep the good work up :j :j :j

Inspiring stuff, keep up the good work..
Every day above ground is a good day.
  • I feel like I'm owning up to my parents about making a BIG mistake and letting them down, but if I don't tell you, then I'm not doing myself any favours and I'll be hiding from my problems again.

My credit card bill this month (the one I only usually use for groceries and petrol) is way over my usual spending. I can pay it off but my £500 savings has gone.

Feeble excuses I know, but 2 family weddings involving travelling and hotels (one abroad), the annual AA membership (car NOT a drink problem) and all the uniform and equipment for my son starting high school tomorrow have all gone on the card.

So, all I can do is confess, pay it off with my savings, alter my debt-free date and start again.

For all those that said my story was inspiring - I'm sorry, but I suppose it just goes to show that we all make mistakes and its important to recognise them and recover from them and still not give up on the goal to be debt-free.......eventually!

    September Update

    Capital One - £12929- £385 per month - 0% until August 2006

    Intelligent Finance - £7643 - £155 per month - 0% until February 2006

I've shuffled some debt from IF to Capital One so I can concentrate on getting rid of the IF debt before I have to pay interest on it.

I know its not the end of the world, but I feel a bit low and as the big balloon said to the small balloon "You've let yourself down"!!

Hope to give a brighter/better picture in October.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Hey honey - I've only just found this thread as it's been bumped with your new posting, and I want to say DON'T FEEL BAD. The spending was necessary - your son needs a uniform, you need the AA as a single female for security, and weddings are expensive and difficult to get out of!

So BIG HUGS to you. You've done fantastically well, and this is just life. You'll soon save up the buffer amount again.

Focus on your massive achievements - all those ccs down to just a couple! Brilliant! :T

You're doing so well - don't let this discourage you. And remember - your £500 was for exactly this type of situation.

  • Hi Dumbledore

I am the same as you I had a bad month a little while ago but you must just pick youself up and carry on. The reward at the end will be so worth it.

Your thread was one of the one's that inspired me at the start of my debt free quest :T

Every day I now wake up thinking about ways to save money to clear more debt instead of about how much the debt is!! It's much better.

    Keep going
