Saniflo bathroom

Hi all

I've found a house I like and had got close to agreeing a price on this place when I found out that the main bathroom uses a saniflo system. This bathroom is upstairs on opposite side of house to the kitchen, however downstairs near the kitchen there is a utility area which houses a standard toilet.

Is this likely to cause problems? it appears that it runs through the house and out through the sewer pipe, however I'm told these systems are unreliable.

Any idea's or knowledge would be grateful

    Horrid things saniflo's are.

Very unreliable - noisey - smelly - prone to blockages, how far do you want me to go ?

If it had been a small wc then I would have said live with it, but with it being a main bathroom....forget it ! or get it changed if you but the house.

If it's got a saniflo for the main bathroom I would be wary of the problems and costs involved with getting it sorted if anything goes wrong.

Saniflo systems are IMO awful and not generally fit for normal every day use (they're about bearable if no other choice for a second toilet that's only used for peeing in).
They tend to block up very very easily with anything like hair getting in them, so if it's being used for the bath or shower as well it's likely to require regular attention, about the only positive is that by the sounds of it the system in the house is likely to not be pumping "up" much if at all, which should make it slightly more reliable.

There is a great article somewhere about why Saniflo's are misnamed.

Saniflo. Designed by devil himself. Manufactured by the French and sent to the UK as retribution for Agincourt, Waterloo and for messing up their beaches on D Day.

Never should these awful pieces of substandard, fault ridden, vile 'engineering' be given house room. Unless of course you wish to be forever pulling yesterday's chilli con carne and tampons out of the things while up to your wrists in someone else's excrement.

Would I likely be looking at mega money to install a normal system in its place?
  • We installed a saniplus (for loo, basin and bath) in our ensuite as part of the renovation work on our 200+ year old thatched house. This is a new bathroom created from a former bedroom in the centre of the house sited away from the soil stacks and with many exposed beamed ceilings we had issues with visible pipework etc. Admittedly it is only used by DH and I, but touchwood we have so far had no problems. That said, we are very careful not to put anything we shouldn't down the loo etc and as it is one of four loos currently in the house it only gets occasional use........

Saniflos are put in really as a last resort. If there's no way of getting a standard 4" waste pipe from the toilet to the soil pipe, then a as igloo has to be used. I'm sure the original installing plumber would have looked at all the options. It is therefore unlikely that ther is an alternative.

  • So I take it Saniflo's aren't installed because they are the cheap option?
