Bayonet fitting LED bulbs?

Looking at replacing two lounge B22 type bulbs that are currently halogen 42W (60W equivalents). Lights are on a dimmer switch and problem with the halogens is their "glare" from the very bright halogen capsule. The lights are in open crystal type shades and used very regularly often being on large part of day and evening.

Seems to be a reasonable choice on Amazon but not sure if anyone has experience of any particular ones please

In all honesty stick to a recognised brand name like philips or osram more expensive than the amazon or ebay options but a darn site more reliable.

I looked into dimmable LED bulbs about 6 months ago and ended up not buying any. The main problems seemed to be;

1/ LEDs tend to be like spot lights rather than dispurse light around a room.

2/ They may not work correctly or at all with dimmer switches even though they claim to.

There may be some new models out now but I would not risk buying one unless there was one with a lot of possitive reviews.

You mentiond Amazon, that would be a good place to start with reading reviews. Good Luck!

I wonder if the Halogens outer glass could be frosted up by sanding with a fine grade wet and dry paper.. not tried it might work

You could try one of these halogen adaptors with a frosted cover:

Saw these and reasonable reviews (scary price though) and not sure how they would look when off in an open or non opaque shade

Seen a couple on Amazon with reasonable reviews between £10 and £14 so may take the plunge and try these out

I've found that to be better than the 60W incandescent bulb I was replacing, although to be fair I did clean the cover at the time so its slightly unfair!

Happy enough with mine and not a ridiculous price but its an amateur view. However, the light all comes from the semi globe bit at the end so its more downward directed than a normal bulb and you'll get less of the lampshade etc glowing than you would normally. For me its fine because the fitting is high and I want the light downwards, but its worth bearing in mind.

I wouldn't buy Osram or Phillips LED products. Been in the LED Lighting industry for over 12 years now and if you go to a specialist retailer of LED Lighting products you'll get a better product.

Some very good dimmable LED products available now as bulbs and spotlights. You are right that they won't all work with all dimmer switches but if you buy from a company that gives you a trial period where you can get a refund then you can buy knowing if it doesn't work you can always get your money back.
