Advice on which phone please

Options
Hi, Thanks to one of the members, 2 years ago I got a Motorola Defy for only £8.00 a month (thanks to cash backs and redemptions).. and I will have to look for a new phone..

My circumstances are such that I am mostly housebound so I don't need an all singing all dancing phone. The reason I do need a mobile though is because I volunteer for a local animal charity and I have to phone people back and, using my landline, I would run up a huge bill phoning mobiles.. and I don't want to lumber the charity with extra bills.. I do get out occasionally so I like the security of having a phone in the car and I use the 'computer' part of the phone a lot as it saves me lugging the laptop all round the house..

Anyway, I bought one of these Blackberry playbooks, which I enjoy and I wondered if I should get a Blackberry phone...

I can get the Blackberry 9320 for £7.62 per month-50 mins/250 texts/750 mb data...(14 months)- t-mobile (blackberry)

Wildfire S/wildfire for £7.62 - same as Blackberry

Nokia c3 gold/5228 for £5.82 - same as Blackberry

Experia Tipo/x8 for £6.43 - same as Blackberry

Defy mini or the Desire c for £6.83 per month - 100 mins/unlimited texts/500mb (24 months) Orange panther

Optimus L3 - same as Defy for £3.43 per month.

I would appreciate a bit of advice here. I know nothing about mobile phones.. I would think the 100 mins would be plenty for what I need... I went for the high data 750 mb... I would hardly ever use the text facility.... I enjoyed using the apps on the Motorola... Hubby loved Angry Birds...

Thanks in advance.

:)

If you really want a new phone, why not buy it outright? You can get a nice android phone for £50 or so.

You can get a free monthly bundle of 100 minutes, 100 texts and 200mb data from Ovivo

Are you with T-mobile at the moment? If not, try to find out from friends what coverage is like where you need it.

Do you have some idea of how many minutes, texts and MB of data you need each month?

I don't actually want another phone... I am happy with the one I have but I don't know if it is worth getting a sim only bundle... I am not all that up on phones... Laptops and software are more my forte... That's why I am asking fellow members as I have always trusted the advice I have got from the forum...

I am lucky if I sent 10 texts a month!! I had unlimited data on my original package but I wasn't sure what used 'data' on the phone.. I tended to use it as a satnav if I was in the middle of Edinburgh or somewhere like that and needed to find a specific address... I also used the internet on it as it would save me having to open up my laptop... (I usually had it linked to my home network)... so apart from that, it was really to phone people back for the charity and the odd phone call to my son's mobile... Say, 100 minutes a month..

I had a payg android that I threw in the back of the drawer as it ate up about £30 of credit in a couple of days as I didn't understand that it was using up data when I had switched off my hub during the night...

    I hope that helps...

    Just get an Ovivo Sim.

You will never need to topup ever again. £0 per month.

    Why pay more?

I am totally confused by your thread

Post #1 "I need to look for a new phone"

Post #4 "I don't actually want another phone"

    Post #1 "I can get the Blackberry 9320 for £7.62 per month-50 mins/250 texts/750 mb data."

Post #1 " I would think the 100 mins would be plenty for what I need."

Post #5 "it was really to phone people back for the charity and the odd phone call to my son's mobile... Say, 100 minutes a month."

And you want the handset to have Sat Nav facilities. Have you checked that the Blackberry can do that?

As advised, if your current handset is unlocked or can be, then just get a sim-only , Giff Gaff or Ovivo bundle for £10 per month or less.

But make sure you have sufficient minutes or you will easily add to your costs if you go over.
  • Sorry Guys Dad, I didn't mean to confuse anyone.. The reason I mentioned the new phone was because the few people I had talked to told me that it was better to get a new contract rather than get a sim only for my existing phone... although it doesn't actually need replaced.

The number of minutes I need is difficult to guess as it depends on how many people get in touch... Most of the offers I would have thought best for me were with T-Mobile... of which, most of them were for 100 mins... and that would be plenty for me... However, the Blackberry would be £10.70 per month for 100 mins..

I'm not sure what is the difference between these phones.. that's why I thought I would ask on the forum... I was just using the satnav as an example but it is not desperate as I have a little sat nav that I could put on the dash...

I thought that if I was on a monthly contract, I would be less likely to run up a large bill than if I had PAYG...

You might at least have a go at Googling for reviews...

The Blackberry would be very different to your current phone for instance, having a physical keyboard at the expense of a smaller screen, and I think a poorer quality camera than your current phone.

You might want to think what you like/dislike about your current phone.

If you can get an idea of what your data usage actually is you could work this out. If your phone doesn't already have a means of monitoring data then there are apps you can get to do this. Here's one (although I haven't checked what version of Android you need / have):

If you can get an O2 signal where you live then perhaps consider one of the deals with Tesco Mobile (they use O2 for their signal).

    You can get a:

HTC Wildfire S with 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 500mg data all for £7.50 per month. (not really an upgrade from your current phone - it has a smaller screen but it will be new and under warranty).

    or

Nokia Lumia 800 with 500 minutes, 5000 texts and 500mb data for £11.45 per month. The Lumia is different from your Defy in that its has a different operating system (Windows 7.5). Its a very good quality phone and very smooth to use. This phone cost around £300 less than a year ago and is currently being heavily discounted because a new upgraded version is available with a new version of the operating system. The phone does not have anything like the number of apps you will have had with your Defy but it does have all the basic ones you will need.

One of the benifits of both these contracts is that they can be capped so no worries about something going over its allowance and ending up with a big bill.

If you keep your old phone and are happy/confident to use cashback sites then there is an offer (which expires in one day so be quick) which gets you a 12 month SIM only contract with 300 minutes, unlimited texts & 500mb data for under £4 (after cashback). You might have to get your phone unlocked if it is locked to another provider. Its with Orange and the link below explains how the deal works.

If you do get a new phone remember your old phone is worth just under £50 if you send it to Asda Tech Recycle (they dont sell for very much more than that second hand).
