Is the insurer Cov!a perchance?
Swintons are owned by them, Cov!a was MMA in a previous life, they have 2 levels of Motor Trade insurance.
MMA asked us to trial their Motor Trade product, I think we have one client out of around 500 Motor Traders with them, as they were after cheap and to hell with the cover.
The parent company of the broker I work for likes to look at all the Motor Trade quotes we get in but they are not necessarily the best for the customers needs, so rather than shoehorn a customer into a contract that does not meet their needs, I prefer to put forward a company that is best suited, and is also the cheapest for any mid term plans they have.
For body shops, in order of preference, I'd go Allianz, NIG, Aviva, AXA.
Both Allianz and AXA offer partial comp cover for own vehicles, this pays for parts and materials but not labour, and applies to own vehicles, not if you prang a customers vehicle. (this is a very basic outline - please speak to your broker for the fineries). Also as a body shop, I would negotiate a higher excess, especially on the road risks/vehicle damage, some do split excesses, ie higher on the road risks and lower on the property.
To get the best price and cover, you need to know the options that are out there and available to you: another is full courtesy car cover, or contingent cover only.
Tick box brokers will not have a clue, but they will be cheap because they've stripped out a lot of the cover that you will never know was available until you want to claim. Their defence is that they sent you the full policy wording as per FSA guidelines.
Whilst I'm on my high horse - please consider extending your Business Interruption Maximum Indemnity Period beyond 12 months, to either 18 or 24 months at least. A nasty fire which involves, police, forensics, surveyors, concrete experts (ie has the concrete flooring been weakened), planning, architects, install a lift due to new disability guidelines, back to planning..blah, blah. can really drag on.0 -

Sounds like Arista
But as dacouch says, they will push Covea, previously known as MMA.0 -

It's a package cobbled together, different sections and different insurers for property, liability, road risks. Just ask yourself, drives car into the garage, takes out a ramp with a £10k vehicle on it. Is that Road Risks or Property Damage??
These policies are like you've bought a MFI wardrobe, it's all bits, and when you really need it and put it together it turns out to be an IKEA Billy Bookcase.0 -
