    The OP never said work insisted they had a phone to pick up emails, only iphones are the only device they support.

    Iphones allow remote wiping and better security than Android when they come as is and out of the box, it may be the OP's work allows them to pick up emails (ie the OP's choice) but if they do it has to be a iOS device.

    Yes - that about sums it up. They do pay the line rental, though. It means I can work at home/elsewhere most of the time rather than travel to the office, so it's in my interest.

    Well, I went back to the Apple store, had another hard reset to factory settings, with no solution. Tried another SIM card - same problem.
    Spoke to Tesco customer service, who couldn't suggest anything else.
    In the end I've got hold of the Tesco iPhone 4S deal, will sell the 'phone to a recycling company and may be about £10-20 down, so not a complete disaster - just very annoying.
