Sorry OP, you've gone against some explicit instructions and admitted it - I think you'd lose this trying to enforce your rights.
You'd be surprised.
I have had tv's in the past that specifically said not to leave them on standby as it reduces the life expectancy of your tv set. Apparently even when its on standby there can be energy going through components - thus they are effectively still being subjected to wear n tear.
I've had handwash only items and put them through on delicate/cold wash and they're not faded at all. My point is that not following instructions doesnt necessarily mean that all faults are now your liability. Although I do agree he's put himself in a bad position by openly admitting he didnt follow the instructions.
He should have waited to see what they said - after all if it was down to improper care then any investigation by retailer/manufacturer would have came to that conclusion without the bias of his admission. You keep using that word. ... to everyone's comments. I have asked for my items back - I guess my gripe is with Miele for not providing a decent hand wash cycle - despite saying that is what it is.0

Oh, and yes I do wash wool in my macine on a cold wool wash - I don't hand wash anything anymore when my machine can do it.0

I don't think any washing machine can for they type of items you were washing.
If you put them in a machine, even on the hand wash cycle, they're going to be in there 20-40 mins opposed to 5 mins in a sink for handwashing. A lot of dye can be lost in that time in the machine compared to a real handwash.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

True but the shop window tends to be bigger so they can see you coming

I put handwash only stuff in my machine on the handwash cycle. But not if it cost £350! I'd follow any instructions precisely so as not to find myself in the unfortunate situation the OP finds herself in.
OP, you should have lied

Alternatively, buy some dye and dye them black again. Top tip: Hand dyeing works best if you use a washing machine

A tv manufacturer state the tv isnt to be left on standby. You leave it on standy and somewhere down the line, the tv breaks. Does that mean its automatically your fault or is it only your fault if the fault is caused by your actions?
While it is entirely possible they have faded due to not being hand washed....its also possible they've faded due to not receiving the appropriate treatment at time of manufacture.
Not following care instructions does not make you liable for inherent faults. It only makes you liable for faults arising due to that improper care.
But as the OP didn't follow the specific instructions, then there is no way to tell if the fault was inherent or not.
With the TV scenario, if they say you must not leave it on standby, then why have a standby function? They often advise against leaving TV's on standby, but this is for safety reasons. So I'm afraid this isn't a good example.0 -
