can anyone recommend a good disinfectant for cleaning litter trays please ? Am I right in remembering that it has to be non-clouding when you add it to water?

TIA

ETA: any from these ?

  • Anything that turns white/cloudy when it hits water is a phenol and toxic to cats.

Beware also of the usual pine fresh scents etc as these aren't pleasant for cats and pine/eucalyptus etc is toxic to cats.

Some non-bio washing powder made up to a 10% solution cleans well and doesn't contain ammonia, which smells like cat wee to cats. See www.fabcats.org.uk for a recipe to clean urine stains from carpets, worsk well for litter trays too.

On the rare occasion the litter tray is in use I have always used tesco value pine disinfectant, it doesn't go cloudy and I use just a small slosh of it in with the hot soapy water.

Mistrel seems to be quite popular with pet owners, you dilute it quite a lot so a bottle lasts ages

For the litter tray I just use Value/ Smartprice thin bleach or hot soapy water (eco washing up liquid). Then obviously loads of rinsing before draining.

Another user of mistralie here .
I order in bulk so it makes it cheaper.
Only thing to be aware of is be at home for the delivery as they wont leave it in a safe place ,parcelforce took mine to the post office which is a way off and i do not drive....try lugging 4 bottles home on the bus.....on second thoughts dont they were way to heavy...

I use bleach... but now reading this maybe I shouldn't be ?

Asda lemon bleach is the one I would usually use. I steep it in that then rinse with boiling water then dry with kitchen roll.

I use bleach in water but rinse the tray out with loads of water after.

If I don't have any bleach then I just use washing up liquid or Flash and that seems to work too.
