First on our own this year - we used to go to my parents but its becoming too much for them and theres family fauds so easier this way. We will get up, open pressies, have breakfast and watch some telly / enjoy our gifts, get washed and dressed and hopefully pick up my granny to visit my grandas grave which has quick become our little tradition, then once weve dropped her home we will drive about 30 mins up the road to my other grandparents grave which will be hard as we only lost my grandmother last year and we were very close, then back to the house stick a film on and sit down to some nibbles whilst I cook dinner, eat, stick on all the soap specials while OH falls blissfully asleep on the sofa!

lets hope all goes to plan!

Every other year we don't have either of our two daughters and husbands and two little girls, who go and do their thing with parents in law. When it's just us two we have a scaled down day (unlike the noisy and chaotic one we will have next year when it will be our turn to have them all): stockings (we still have them !) earlyish, bucks fizz and croissants for breakfast - and, for some reason my Pa had a family tradition of having a pork pie for breakfast, so I solemnly eat a small one on my own as OH hates them. Then I cook a scaled down Xmas Turkey lunch which we eat at about 3 - 4 pm. OH washes up and we both snooze, sip exotic alcoholic drinks which we have found at the back of the drinks cupboard or been given, open our big presents from each other, read our new books, hopefully watch a good film on the BBC (OH hates ad breaks) and generally laze. Sometimes he goes out for a walk round the village but I don't as have bad knees. (Though this year I have taken up Nordic Walking which I like, so perhaps I'll be walking too). Just when I think it's all over he usually says he's hungry so I send him off to make a turkey sandwich. One year I got a turkey crown which was tasteless and boring so I just get a small whole turkey and if we don't finish it within a couple of days I freeze the cooked meat and have it later, but that way you get decent bones to make good stock. It sounds boring but we enjoy it a lot, and then hugely look forward to the next year's big and noisy family invasion. Best of both worlds !

hubby & I are spending Xmas day apart. This year we were on rotation to spend the day at my parents. Due to a falling out, that's not happening now. He's off to his family for the day instead but I don't feel like going too (as they're all over to ours on Boxing Day) so will just be me on my own.

If I'm honest, I'm a bit upset that he's chosen his family over me, again. I could go, and they're all lovely people, but for just the once I'd like to feel important enough to him that he'd consider a day with just the pair of us :(

  • This is going to be me and my partners first Christmas alone and I can't wait!!

No more tear filled eyes talking to each other on the phone 75 miles apart, no more trying to silently have fun without creaking a single bed :rotfl:, no more dealing with inevitable family dramas and no more having to wear whatever embarrassing hat, jumper, scarf my MIL demands I wear because she believes my own clothes wont be warm enough...

And hello!! :T to... lie in, adult films, adult fun, boozy drinks and romantic xmas dinner!!
  • Last year my mate was on her own for 1st time with hubby, they had a 'carpet picnic' loads of goodies from M&S ready prepared...no cooking, lots of wine & adult time. She said it was one of the best christmas days she'd had in years.

I love xmas day now me and my partner live together.

He brings me cup of tea and toast in bed and then we open our pressies. Get up and dressed, I go out on my horse (weather permitting) and he goes out on his bike.

We have stopped by his parents and mine to say hello but not for long as we like to be just the two of us. I buy our meal, all ready prepared from M&S and we pig out in front of tv and wood burner for rest of the day.

This year we are looking after our neighbours 4 dogs so will also take them for a long walk.

    It is absolute bliss :D
  • I am working nightshift on Xmas eve. Will be home around 0630 on christmas morning and will go down and see great nephew opening presents. Then depending how tired I am will go and see my parents and in laws. (if too tired dh will do the rounds with the presents). Then bed for few hours. Then me and dh planned a lazy day. Getting duck from chinese supermarket and some snack type food. Few bottles good champagne and big box hotel chocolate. Going lounge around in our new crimbo pj's and watch tv. We are currently going through the adoption process so all going well this is last time we will be able to have a christmas like this so making the most of it and going to spend it just the two of us.

We alternate between families on the day and throw in a year just the two of us. Much as I love seeing our families, I do love our days just us too - we have stockings as late as I can make myself stay asleep (usually around 6-7!), toast and real butter for breakfast, then eek out pressies, speak to our families, cuddle, watch tv, eat and enjoy each others company.

I agree, family isn't just those with children!
