The OP doth protest too much methinks. Touched a raw nerve? Maybe you should change your name to Hyena instead. Much more appropriate.

There maybe someone the name fits better. ;)

OP has posted some interesting facts and intelligent comment.

Are they breaking the rules on displaying "reduced" prices?

I doubt it as I'm sure that the administrators know exactly how to word the adverts whilst staying legal.

A short time ago, a large department store in Croydon (Allders of Croydon) closed down, and they had a closing down sale just before this.
Many of the items were shown as being 20*/30*/40%* off which sounded like a good deal, but when you read the small print on the banners it stated something like:
"*All reductions are based on MRP"

So, for months before the sale, they may have advertised an item at £20 (with an MRP of £30 but no one ever actually sells at this price), then when the "sale" started, kept the price at £20 but state that it is 30% off.
  • Don't worry Azari, I'm still waiting for an answer to the question I asked Ionkontrol yesterday (post No 22).

Just another poster it seems who is happy to throw insults around, but won't enter into any meaningful discussions in order to debate their opinions.

I think that it is perfectly reasonable for someone to go to a sale and then come out complaining that the prices were not sale prices at all and that things could be had cheaper in other stores.

In terms of their duty to maximise the return on what's left, the administrators have to weigh up the cost of keeping the store going (lease, utilities, staff, etc.) against selling off the stock cheap(er) and eliminating the costs.

At the moment it seems that they don't feel the need for a fire sale.

Maybe they've realised it's just around peak time of the year and their best opportunity to shift the goods, and so they'll wait til after Christmas.

Well we got some bargains over the last few days at Comet. Hubby bought a combi microwave for the price of a cheap one.

He went up the weekend and bought a signal booster for the wifi which had been reduced. The cheapest he could find one online was £70 and he paid £35.

Last time we went there was hardly any stock left.

i went into comet just before it became public it was to go into administration to price some epson ink, price in comet £60, price at tesco £34. when i pointed the price difference out to the salesman he said yes but comet ink are buy two get one free!!!. called into comet last week to collect a pre ordered item, epson ink is now £60 (no buy 2 get 1 free), so maybe they dont really want to sell it.

So it was still a better deal at Tesco:

    Tesco £102 for three
    Comet £120 for three

I doubt it, but what could they do if they were?

Take them to court? Fine them?
They may not be around by the time a court hearing is arranged, and even if they are, they don't have any money to pay a fine anyway.

As Comet is now being run by administrators, it is these administrators that would be liable for any breech of advertising regulations.
However, as I mentioned earlier, these companies probably know exactly what they can and can't get away with when it comes to advertising reductions.
