  • So tell me Ionkontrol, if you were looking to purchase an item, wouldn't you look for the cheapest place to buy it from?

To be fair to Comet, they are now aiming to make as much money as possible from the stock they have left, to go to the administrators and creditors. They aren't bothered about long-term customer retention. So if they can seel it for a higher price, that's what they'll do. I would expect prices on remaining stock to have increasing discounts shortly, until it's all gone.

They won't be knocking much off just yet because they can just send leftover stock to other stores, and some stuff could well be accepted back by their suppliers.

The only stuff they won't be able to get rid of this way is ex-display, stuff that's been in the warehouse forever (probably mostly customer returns that've never been dealt with) and fixtures and fittings.

Even if that sounds promising, the administrators normally have arrangements with companies to clear this. The only true bargains will be in the auction houses sometime next year.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

As others said, they won't knock loads off, because they can still sell a lot of it for a decent price to those other than the consumer.

I do feel sorry for all the people who are losing their jobs and unfortunately it must be to them, like seeing the vultures swarming around the rotting carcass.

But it is exactly what the OP was doing. Company going down, having a fire sale, grab a bargain and then copping the hump when stuff was cheaper elsewhere. I stand by my comment.

I think hump was that it wasn't actually a fire sale in the sense that most of the stuff is still overpriced ...
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Tread carefully, dear Ionkontrol: standing by one's public stupidity speaks less of principle as absence of brain . . . :)

Comet is in ADMINISTRATION.It owes money to CREDITORS. Those creditors include SUPPLIERS. Those suppliers have EMPLOYEES. Those employees are fervently hoping their employers will RECEIVE from the administrators as much as can be possibly secured from the sale of Comet assets / stock.

The administrators had to decide on going for a genuine all-out liquidation sale now to maximise cash. . . or to stage a fake liquidation sale in hope that consumers of 2012 don't shop around and wouldn't actually know a liquidation sale if they fell over it.

They chose the latter. . . and they're wrong, because consumers do know all about the marketplace, one of the reasons why Comet crashed in the first place being people exercising their right to spend their money how and where they choose.

If Deloitte had the kind of sense that would justify the £million plus it's going to make out of this administration -- tst, tst: yet more vultures, eh, Ionkontrol? --it would have realised that no sensible consumer is going to stump up hard-earned money for a Comet item offered at a "liquidation sale" price that's higher than is being charged elsewhere and being sold by a defunct retailer soon to vanish entirely, leaving the purchaser with no come-back and no warranty support at all (or even the safety net of The Sales of Goods Act.)

Given all those obvious disadvantages, Deloitte might've gone for a 40% or 50% discount sale from the get-go (something its competitors feared from the outset of this administration.) But Deloitte didn't, and so lots and lots of people are going into Comet stores and emerging empty handed and shopping eslewhere yet again.

You are clearly of the view that my family should have paid £100 more at the Comet "liquidation sale" than we can pay elsewhere for the same item. Or, better yet: we (and every other consumer in the UK) should stay well clear of any attempt by Comet's administrators to realise the cash value of assets/stock to help the creditors of Comet and those creditors' employees.

But then. . . you're as ignorant of the ways of commerce and finance as you are of the ethos of the very forum in which you choose to spout your sanctimonious drivel (clue: it's called 'Moneysaving'.)

Though it's tempting to regard you as a moron, I'll stick with being charitable and attribute your daftness to your tender age, rather than absence of functioning brain cells. Hence my earlier response to you: oh, poor diddums, did your Mommy forget to change your nappy. . . again?

Comet stores are going under because of what the opp did. Go in the store to look and inspect the goods then go home and buy online because it is cheaper.

Shops are closing every day because people buy mostly on line(even me).

Depending on what you want to buy in the Comet sale they are offering 10%.20% and 30% off.
No refunds or returned. Once you have paid there is no going back.
One good thing is that they can now take their own gift cards again.
    No American Express cards.

The guarantee will now be with the manufacture and not the store. So recommend registering what you buy online, like with Morphy Richards for example.

If spending over £100 use a visa card.

There is now no 3 for 2 offers but you will have the 20% off per item.

Remember the staff are soon to loose their jobs and are doing as per told. Be nice to them!

I disagree to a point. Yes they've lost some customers who would rather buy online for a cheap price, but there are plenty of people who would rather buy face to face in a store especially with large items.

The reason Comet is on the way out, I believe is more due to the crappy way it dealt with it's customers, especially after things go wrong. It's CS is awful and people who have had bad experiences won't go back. I used Comet for a few items a couple of years ago and it ended up being a right farce. I'd be stupid to put up with that again.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Got a friemd who is a white goods retailer. Always kept an eye on Comet/currys prices, so they could price match in their own shop, if they needed to ( most times were cheaper anyway )

They said they have been in 2 local comets and checked the prices, they are ( for the most part ) exactly the same as they were before administration. Anything that has a reduced to clear sticker on it, needs to be taken with a pich of salt.

A lot of manufacturers had in their terms of contract, that they could come in and remove products from display and in stock in case of failure to pay. Most have done this, so a lot of the stock left is carp.

Mind you, hearing what they owe some manufacturers, would make your hair curl. put it this way, I have been told by a good source, that they owe one manufacturer so much, they could afford to build a hospital with the debt. Watch out for all the redundancies with manufacturers who have to try and recover the debts owed. A lot of them couldn't get insurance on their orders for Comet.

This has been coming for a long time.

I went into Comet yesterday to buy a laptop, the one i was looking at was reduced by 20% at £356, went next door to PC World and the exact same model was on for £269. While i was in Comet I compared a few of the prices on the internet and not 1 was cheaper in Comet, no wonder they are closing down if they cant/wont compete.

Are they breaking the rules on displaying "reduced" prices?
