Redundancy looming...

Hi all,
I'm going to be made redundant at some point in the next fortnight,
At the time of finishing, I'll have worked there for 2 years, 11 months and 2 weeks - I find it a bit galling that i'm only entitled to 2 years redundancy pay - surely it should be pro-rata?
On another note, I worked a week in hand at the start of the employment - does anyone know if i'm legally entitled to the weeks pay as well as the redundancy?
Finally - I had mortgage payment protection cover with HSBC from 2004, which I still pay monthly for. As their office is closed until tomorrow has anyone got any idea what cover I would have??
Sorry for all the questions, but i've never faced this before!
Cheers

Sorry to hear your news - have you got any holiday owing which might help take the date over the three years?0

On another note, I worked a week in hand at the start of the employment - does anyone know if i'm legally entitled to the weeks pay as well as the redundancy? Yes - your redundancy payment is separate from your actual wage/salary which is paid separately, in the same way as it would be if you resigned.
Finally - I had mortgage payment protection cover with HSBC from 2004, which I still pay monthly for. As their office is closed until tomorrow has anyone got any idea what cover I would have?? You will be covered for whatever you paid for. You need to read your policy terms.
Sorry for all the questions, but i've never faced this before!
Cheers

If there is any holiday accrued but not taken, the employer would simply pay for that holiday (just as they could if someone resigned) and thus avoid paying, in this case, another 50% in redundancy payment.0 -
Thanks for the replies Littlevoice and Marlot!
I've got 5 days holiday which i've had to keep aside for Christmas so they'll need to pay me those, but I didn't think it would carry me into the 3rd year, more's the pity!
I've got to ring the mortgage payment protector people in the morning - I just can't find the policy schedule in the house at the mo!
On a (slightly more) positive note, was just watching a programme about Council Tax on the telly and remembered that I won't have a payment to make on that in Feb and March yipee!!
Cheers again0 -

But will you have accrued all of those 5 days by the time your employment actually comes to an end?
Holiday is accrued proportionately during the course of the year. If you leave before the end of the holiday year, holiday related to the proportion of the year when you are not employed has not been accrued. Hence my using the phrase "accrued but not taken" in post #4.
If your holiday year ends on 31 December, you would still be due some of those 5 days but if it is an April to March holiday year then those 5 days would all, I suspect, be due to be "earned" in the period when your employment has ended and therefore would not be paid when you leave.0 -
Check the dates carefully
have you been given notice of termination yet?
if not the notice clock has not started yet.
being made redundant in the next couple of weeks is a bit wooly.0 -
Haven't been given the notice yet - I work 5 days a week and they will time it to finish on Christmas Eve
My holidays have accrued as the end of the holiday year is Dec 31st - we always close from Christmas Day to part way into the new year and have to keep 5 aside for this.
By the way I got hold of HSBC about the Mortgage Payment Protector - It pays out after 30 days so my house will be covered with about £60 to spare each month!0 -
Hi all again, Redundancy for me starts at the end of my shift on Saturday! However, one or two more questions which i'm hoping someone can advise me on :
I'm starting my own business in February - Basically trading from the existing outlet I work from now (the same building but with me as the boss!). So : Is it worth me trying to claim anything from benefits? I've done the benefits advisor questionnaire on the web, which states I could get £88 a week - but doesnt say if there's a lead time. I assumed that if you applied (and got) JSA you had to be actively looking for work - but I know what I'm doing in Feb, so would I be allowed to claim? I have redundancy money which should just about see me through to Feb, then i'll be earning again (plus i'll have sold the car!) so will have cash - anyone advise?
Cheers
ps - I live in Staffs (rented house), but also have a home (and family who I am staying with over xmas/early Jan) in Wales, so if I signed on, presumably I'd have to be in Staffs to visit the Job Centre??0 -

Yes - to claim JSA you have to be actively seeking work. Would you be trying to find something to do before your February start? Some temp work?
If your stay in Wales means you won't be job-hunting because you are spending time with your family rather than being willing to do work, then you can't claim JSA for the time you are there. When you return to Staffs in January, provided you are seeking work, you would be signing at a Staffs jobcentre.0 -
Just a quick update to this thread : Returning back home to Staffs tomorrow and will be making an appointment with the job centre on Monday. I forfeited a weeks claim form JSA as I wanted some time in Wales for Christmas and New Year (plus the petrol cost would be more than any potential benefit!).
I'll be (sort of) looking for temp work during January, but can't realistically see me getting anything that will last just 3 weeks, especially as I will be putting time into setting up the business, but I understand the need to be looking in order to claim the benefit. Can anyone talk me through the appointment at Job Centre?
Do they take into account the fact I have a mortgage (on a house which is rented out in Wales), and I am myself renting a property in Staffs when working out the assets? Anyone want to take a guess at what I may be able to claim (until 1st Feb - when my new place opens!)0
