VM to Tesco broadband?

Few questions:
When I came into my flat few years ago, there was a telephone socket, but don't know which provider placed it.
Anyway, I called VM for telephone, broadband, and they came installed a socket and broadband. Its used to cost me £29 p/m, and now £37, and prices are going up next year!!!!!
I need broadband unlimted and 24 hrs calls.
I have had a look at Tesco broadband, and don't know they reviews...may be some people can tell me about they reviews? (I understand I need a BT Line)
How do I check the old socket next to VM socket?
Does getting a new line from BT mean I have to get a contract too from them?
Thanks

I would assume your other socket is a BT line especially if it's the only one you have other than the VM one.
You would not need a contract with BT to use the line. A BT line basically means BT owns the line and cover all the external maintenance etc. If you were to pay line rental to another company using your BT line they would pay BT money for you to use the line. You only need to pay BT if you really, really, really want to.
As your line is most likely dead an engineer from BT would come to your home and turn it back on not someone from Tesco even if you moved to them. This sometimes incurs a fee but not always. Getting broadband started can take a few weeks sometimes.0
