'Switching' electricity suppliers from a business supplier (Opus) to domestic
Hi, I have recently moved into a rental property where the existing electricity supplier is Opus Energy, because several years ago a business was run from they property, though that is no longer the case. I want to shop around for a decent price for electricity - especially since the place has storage heaters, so I don't want to pay over the odds for what will end up being lots of power - but, the 'switch' sites don't seem to offer my supplier (Opus) as a jumping off point.
Does anyone have any idea who I go about getting a comparison and swapping using one of these or other sites, or will I just have to go old school and call around?
Thanks.

Just remember that Opus can't charge you business contract rates even if Deemed.
Ofgem has specific Standard Licence Conditions (SLC) that state it has to be domestic.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
"Several years ago a business was run from the property" ?
This is something your landlord should have sorted out ages ago, but I'm afraid that as the tenant you are now lumbered with the problem which can be something of a Mare's Nest to sort out.
WRITE to Opus pointing out that your dwelling is in fact residential, they should not be chargeing a Business tariff and that you will not pay any Bill based on a Business tariff
It will take a while to get sorted, so put money aside to meet the acceptable bills when they arrive
PS at the moment there is another Opus thread on this page entitled " Opus Energy out of Contract rates" - This has been replied to by Opus who give an Email address of

As I understand it, Opus are a supplier of energy to businesses only. I can't remember ever seeing them come up on any comparison site (for domestic users)
The only thing I suspect the OP could ask is that the energy supplied is VAT rated at the domestic rate, rather than the higher business rate.
Edit: Of course the energy should already be being charged at the domestic VAT rate, notwithstanding it is a business tariff, as the energy has been used primarily for domestic purposes for many years0 -

You won't for the reason I posted in my previous post.
However, you can still use a comparison site to find the best deal. Choose any current supplier and ignore the indicated savings, just look at the annual costs.
Be careful to check the existing suppliers terms and conditions with regards to switching supplier, as terms for business contracts can be very different to those for domestic contracts.0 -

It doesn't matter because the SLC's quite clearly state that upon finding a domestic customer, they must enter into a domestic supply contract.
This exists to protect domestic consumers from this very issue because its really not the consumers problem that there was a change in use which resulted in switching to a business only supplier.
This also protects the consumer from having high business Deemed rates applied.
How Opus will deal with it is likely to be difficult for the consumer. How they will create a rate, I'm not sure but they can obtain approval from Ofgem for standard rates contracts as Deemed only.
Even with a mainstream domestic & business supplier, they often trade on separate portfolios so use different entities (Bgas & Npower do this) so they have to perform a switch. Until the switch completes, the business side have to bill on domestic rates...its not the customers problem that they like to manage their portfolios like this.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
