The A64 is bad at rush hour but I've been on at other times and it was always fine. I always liked York - it always looked clean
york is lovely, like I've said - but the traffic is a nightmare - I had a friend staying from London and she said it was worse than there! the A1237 ring road is jammed solid most of the day.
however its a small place and lots of people cycle or walk.
because we have lots of tourists we do have quite a lot of nice restaurants and bars, far more than we should have for a city of our size.
minimum of about £800 to rent a reasonable size house.
schools are good'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0 -

Not quite sure how it is between Leeds and York though?
York and Leeds are 20 minutes in either direction. Harrogate has always been popular for comuters to both cities.
A 3 bed family house here will set you back around £700+ a month, and thats in some of the nice areas as well. Head for the south side of the town and you'd need to dig a bit deeper, at around £800+ a month.
Agreed that buying in Harrogate is a nightmare though. A 2 bed terrace will set you back around £150,000. There are properties here for under £150k mark, but they are few and far between, and either need work doing, or are REALLY tiny.
However, as someone that's lived here all my life, I love it here. I rent, with my husband, as I actually prefer it, especially with the housing market being the way it is.0 -

Still not between Leeds and York

When I lived in Yorkshire I didn't live in a house, back in those days you had to buy a cardboard box to live in by t' mill, and you were lucky to get hot and cold running drain water...
Think we might need a bit more guidance from the OP before this turns into a Yorkshire thread!0 -
Hi,
The best thing to do would be to write down a list of all the places where your husband can work, and also draw up a short list of things that are important to you.
Go through each of the locations on your short list and write down the average rental costs from zoopla - eg for Weymouth http://www.zoopla.co.uk/market/dorset/weymouth/
Then you have a list of all the possible locations you could move to along with the average rental costs. Do further research and score each place on other factors like crime etc
We have just done the life change thing and moving from London to Weymouth - we have bought a huge 5 bedroom property right on the harbour side for less money than our London studio flat!!0 -
how about essex, harlow/chelmsford areas, harlow prices start about £850 per month, chelmsford about £800, both easy to get to london from.
also lots of beautiful villages in essex, worth a look.0 -
Agree that you need to start with the places your husband can work and go from there, otherwise the whole thing gets too overwhelming. Also, sounds obvious, but go and spend at least a few days having a really good look around anywhere you think might be right for you. Actually view properties that you might want to rent or buy; if there's a "good" school, go and have a look around it and talk to the teachers. Lots of places are much nicer on paper (or on a computer screen!) than in real life.0

We had friends that moved from London to West Sussex and they love it although found it hard to cope with the degree change, (and I thought it was warmer down here but not if you're used to the extra degrees in London)!!
They are very happy, not exactly cheap but cheap compared to London! We pay £850 for a 3/4 bed 3 storey house by the river/beach, but next door rents for £1200. You can buy a family house anywhere from £170+ depending on the area and condition.
Come live by the seaside, your kids would love it!!Saving for Disney again, oops why book one Disney holiday when you can book two!:starmod: Emergency Fund Savings - #148 - £10/£1000 1% :starmod::xmastree:#083 SPC6 £63 - SPC7 £90 - SPC8 £63 - SPC9 £54 - SPC10 £26 - SPC12 £70 :xmastree:0 -
My son lives in Abingdon, lovely place.
When we actually went into the town we were struck by the family atmosphere where families sat in restaurants, no shouting and bawling, parents talking nicely to their children who were so well behaved.
People were nice too but an expensive place to buy a property.
Abingdon is nice but expensive - I used to work there - and also prone to flooding.
You have the River Ock and the Thames and it does flood.
Rental prices for 3 bed properties - there won't be much under £1k a month - not much less than OP is paying now.
And the A34 must be one of the worst roads in the UK - the times I was late for work due to accidents I couldn't count.
There are some nice villages around too - but again not cheap.0
