Help needed to escape our poverty trap!

So for the sake of our marriage, our future and the future of our children we have decided enough is enough, we need to get out of London!

We are in rented accommodation paying £1225 PCM for a 3 bed house that is of the standard you would expect at the bottom end of the market . We are in a permanent panic that our landlord will put up the rent, it is getting more impossible to find something we can afford by the week.

I am looking for opinions on where we could go! We are looking for reasonable rental/buying prices but we need to make sure the area is not going to be awful! We are in enough of a pickle without making things worse for ourselves.

Would love to hear from everyone with opinions :T

  • A lot of this is surely going to depend on work; have you got jobs that you can get elsewhere? Can you work remotely?

We have been thinking of moving in a few years time to Wales, houses there v inexpensive and beautiful country. Trouble is I think we would struggle to find work there.

My husband works for a big company that has offices everywhere so transferring is possible, I'm looking for work but will do any thing I can fit around my kids or in the evenings.

There have been threads on this before, it's worth running an advanced search. Every city and every county has good and bad areas, you can't generalise. Yorkshire is a huge and beautiful county, see places drop down menu http://www.yorkshire.com/

I live in York which is lovely but isnt a cheap place to buy or to rent - not as expensive as you're paying though

York is brilliant, the prices of houses arent that bad either.

    Plenty of good schools,
    Plenty of lovely people
No rat race like in the big cities.

    You would love it.

    Google the York Website.

  • York is stunning i agree, and loads of history and culture. Im from somewhere called rossendale in lancs and moved to the south west 4yr ago. I wanted my children to be brought up somewhere "nice". Best thing i ever did. Do some research as to where housing is cheap(ish) and there is a good job market. Sounds daft but make it into a project, so you will be well informed.
Areas with good schools, high wages and low crime will naturally be more expensive, so decide what is more important to you as a family. Personally i'd rather be broke but know my children are safe and getting a really good education than anything else.
Good on you for trying to break the cycle x
The feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!

The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea

I may as well give a plug to my home area, which has done well in a recent family-orientated evaluation:

    http://www.thisisnorthdevon.co.uk/Chulmleigh-Shebbear-places-raise-child-UK/story-17061835-detail/story.html

There's no doubt this area is safe, very pretty and boasts some good schools, but if you are the sort of person who doesn't want to travel far for your job, entertainment & retail therapy, you'd be better off somewhere else!

There's good community spirit in Middle Devon, mainly because the holiday/second homes are concentrated in the touristy areas, mostly near coasts.

My son lives in Abingdon, lovely place.

When we actually went into the town we were struck by the family atmosphere where families sat in restaurants, no shouting and bawling, parents talking nicely to their children who were so well behaved.
People were nice too but an expensive place to buy a property.

House prices are high in York compared to Leeds and further up,the a1 (we have just moved from York to Darlington, bought a bigger detached house more bedrooms with garage and gardens 5 years old for £4 yes four!!!! more than we sold our pokey 3 bed terrace for!) and as for rat race...I'm not sure what part of York you live in but you bviously never use the a64 or a1237! Gridlock from 7am til7pm!
