NO. Log on to your router and obtain your router line statistics.
These give an accurate reading of you connection speed.

Results from speedtesters will be around 10% less than this due to overheads.

    Rate (kbps) 14208 1072

Is this the figure I should look at to get speed?

yes the downstream, the other one is if you upload.
  • That is a lot different to the results i get from speedtest, net, or any other speed site.
I get something like 7000, and less than 1000 up, any ideas why it would be so different?

I'm not an expert on this but from what I know, the upstream is nearly always 1mb or lower as the provider sets the limit very low.

The downstream changes all the time throughout the day, depending on loads of factors, such as how many people in your area is using the service.

Run the test a few times to get an average, as each time you run it you get a slightly different number, here are 3 speed checkers.

    these 2 are good too

my downstream is around 18000 but my speed checker results are around the 14mb range. I guess because I'm capped at 14mb, same maybe for you?
  • Thankyou OP for asking this question, i've just been faffing around trying to check mine and came across the speedtest site which said my postcode ran at 5.3 (local top speed should be 8)
I've run the cleaner to get rid of rubbish and then got my radio on and as soon as I got here the radio has started going slow again, it has been like for about now and is driving me mad.
I think I will have to brave a phone call to sky tomorrow, normally I would ask no,1 to do it for me but he's away (so not even using his laptop) and anyway I hate asking for help as he makes me feel soo thick!

Sky are blocking speedtest.net for me, ages to load page then test just hangs,

2 mins to load last night on IE, 4 and half minutes hanging on speedtest.

    Similar tonight.

EDIT: speedtester.co.uk does same thing !t

I can stream movies, HD on PC, mobile & xbox but try testing and it hangs on ping.

This is what I'm getting at the moment.

    2319721631.png

    My underlying stats are:-
    Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8191 kbps 767 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.5 dB 25.6 dB
Noise Margin 7.6 dB 15.15 dB

    Which is what I'd expect.

    I'm using a Sky SR101 hub.
