Splitting hard drives

If I split my hard drive, does that mean if my pc went down that the other hard drive would still be safe and working if was complete reinstall?

I have not split it up yet and I have never done this, but have been considering it.

  • Only if in raid, unless you mean data on a second drive which would be safe from harm.

If you partition one drive then you can reinstall the operating system onto one partition without losing the data on the second partition

  • Hi,

I'm probably repeating what has been said but..

If you split a single "physical" drive in 2 or more partitions (will show up as drives in windows) then if that drive fails then all data will be lost, If you are using the first partition (drive) to install Windows and using the Second to have a backup copy then as said if the drive fails both will be lost.

If you have 2 physical Hard Disk Drives installed in the computer in a RAID 0 configuration then this clones all the information from the drive, It will show up in Windows as 1 drive but if one of these 2 drives fail the other will still be working. RAID is not a basic feature and you may no even know what it is, if not then this is probably not what you are asking :D.
  • Hi

    Check your RAIDS.
Raid 0 is a stripe- this uses both drives to speed up a system.

Raid 1 is a mirror (exact copy).

For home systems I would recommend using Raid 1. His means a single surviving disk can be used in any system.

Other levels of Raid do give better protection but are more involved in setup/running and recovery.

This is my own opinion, here are many different opinions of Raid setups, you can spend years researching it.
