How Do I Recover Lost Data From PC sickness

I wish to know this for future reference rather then having to keep paying out to get this fixed.
My PC has gone up the wall, I see blue screen with errors, I know that if I had of saved all my data that I could now have maybe recovered it all by reinstalling all or something, rather then reinstalling from scratch and losing everything but keeping all my data in tact.
But I dont know how to do this, and wondered if anyone here knows how Data recovery is done? do I need a special disk? or maybe I need a few DVD-R or something, or maybe special program to use, I do have the Ghost CD but to be honest, I dont really understand it as it says about segiments and stuff and I am not up on all that side of it.
If anyone could just give me basic instructions even on how to copy all my data in case my pc gets sick again next time then at least I have it all saved and can reinstall.
Thanks

to recover data, it depends what the problem is, if it's a windows won't boot scenario, a usb caddy is easiest, although you can use bootcd's to get at it if necessary.
You will probably be able to find a ghost tutorial on the web, but the earlier versions don't support usb etc.!!

There are multiple options, especially if one has more than one computer as you can just stick it in another computer, or use an external hard drive case.
If someone just has one computer, then I think people should have a several burnt discs with each of the following on:- A bootable Linux LiveCD (e.g. Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) so they can copy files, browse the web for help if they need advice, etc.
- Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) lots of utilities for many contingencies, including file recovery tools
- or rescue discs which include Testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Livecd)
- A copy of Windows!
- Windows recovery disc (http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1114725.htm)
- Several bootable antivirus rescue discs (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/41653210#Comment_41653210)
If you can't get into Windows, normally booting up with an Ubuntu LiveCD will let you access your files. It has a web browser so you can ask for help.
If the file system is corrupted, then using Testdisk is my tool of choice. At worst, just getting the files off with the included utility called Photorec (which recovers more than just photos).
If you have a difficult virus, then a bootable antivirus can greatly help - although they take awhile to finish. Dr Web has a web browser.0 -
I have XP not the new windows 7.0

doesn't stop you doing a backup, disk imaging has been around for decades.!!

Even though my pc has gone down completely and just see green screen, is it possible I could still do a back up of my original stuff myself rather then paying out a fortune for someone else to do this? reason I ask is because I would not know how to, or will it just end up copying the green screen instead?0

yes (if the disk is still working) see posts above!!

I tried a back up, it would not have it, so now its gone off to the pc shop to be fixed.0

did you ask them to save your data?
