    My oh grew up in a farmhouse which only had a fire in the living room, no other heating in the house. At Christmas time they used to make the trifle and put it in the bedroom to set as it was the same temperature as the fridge.
    My f-I-l did eventually have central heating installed but it wasn't until the 1990s :eek:
    Needless to say there was enough money secreted away in various accounts to baffle the tax man, that being far more important than renovation and modernising and making the house comfortable for their later years.
