:rotfl: a friend at school mistook one of these for a tomato once. she bit into it at lunch time and gagged, we all tried and hated it, it dried our mouths and made our lips stick to our teeth. no wonder if it was just the peel :rotfl:Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

I too have only just discovered persimmons. I haven't tried them as they are, but in my cooking class last week our teacher showed us how to make a cake out of persimmon puree, rum and chopped dates. Omg, it was one of the best cakes I've ever tasted. And I've tasted a lot of cake0

Top tip seems to be - eat when 'Ripe'! Thanks peeps, at least I am not the only one never to have come across these before! and they are quite different to the ones I have seen called 'Sharon'fruit - I tried those and yes it was like wood pulp and I didnt like them! Star fruit look so pretty, but, to me dont taste of much! I will buy one now and again to add to fruit salad just for the wow factor!0

I quite agree about the staff fruit!
I have a theory that the more exotic beautiful looking the fruit is, the less interesting it will taste.
Eg, star fruit, drag on fruit , that looked amazing but was utterly tasteless!
Que the ugly looking passion fruit, no great looker but bags of amazing flavour I those seeds!Norn Iron Club member 4730 -

I love passion fruit too. Sometimes, if I am extremely lucky with whoopsies, I make passionfruit tart. It's so good, but uses loads of passionfruit.
Dh is desperate to try growing them, but depsite bei in the south I don't think we have much hope of edible fruit, though we might get beautiful passion flowers. Not sure if the edula variety roots will be hardy, or if it will only be an annual. I have tried suggesting just going for a floral variety, but he really wants to try something that might fruit on a south facing wall.0 -

I like to try the different fruits Morrisons now sell, I am not keen on Star Fruit as it isnt very nice at all very bitter. I want to try qumquats they look yummy. And a giant thing like looks like a grapefruit! But I cant think what it is called. But yes I give strange fruits a big thumbs up!Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

Saw some of these tonight in Tesco, have never had them before either so didn't buy any, wish I had now! Had heard of Sharon fruit but not Persimmons.0

persimmon were very popular in the 80s, and I used to eat loads of them then and then they sort of disappeared; last week though in Morrisons they had them reduced to 25p for 4 and they were gorgeous - maybe I should eat them more often'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

Unfortunately, I discovered them whilst abroad where they could be bought very cheaply from local street vendors if you knew what you were doing (if you didn't know what you were doing, then they would try to charge you £3 for a mango :rotfl::rotfl:). Having returned to the UK, the only place that sells them is the Chinese supermarket - £4.50 for three tiny little fruit :eek:
If anyone knows where to find mangosteens at a price that doesn't imply that they have to be smuggled into the UK in someone's underpants then I'd be much obliged!
OMG, I have been looking for the English name of these for years, absolutely my favourite. The Bengali name for them is boobi
My favourite fruit is lychee and also small green mangoes. I went to Bangladesh in April specifically because it was mango season.
I also like guava (when it's still slightly underripe) and smelly old jackfruit. You'll have to speak up; I'm wearing a towel0 -
