new favourite fruit

Was shopping in Aldis last week and saw a pack of what looked like three oversize orange tomatoes. the label said 'Persimmons' - puzzled me a bit as I thought they built houses!
anyway, I bought some to try (and was grateful for the little info label as I didnt have a clue) and WOWWWWW! they are gorgeous!
my granddaughters loved them - they are so sweet and juicy! I must get some more and why havent I seen them before!!!! If you havent tried them, then do! just cut the tops off and you can either eat them 'as is' or cut them into wedges.

Of course, the rest of you may be thinking 'poor dear, meri lives in the backside of beyond, we've had those for years'!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'm off to google them as I wouldn't know what one looked like if it was right in front of me! And I do recognise most fruit and vegetables, even the odd foreign ones!!

Ahhh!!! Yes! I recognise them but have never tried them as they don't look terribly appealing...

I will definately buy some next time we are shopping... What would you most liken them to?

Never heard of them, so you're not alone.

Don't like the look of those innards http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Diospiros_kaki_Fruit_IMG_5472s.JPG
Do you eat those bits, or just the outside bit?

They are also known as sharon fruit and yes I totally agee with you they are yummy!!
  • They are also sometimes known as 'Sharon Fruit' and, yes, I have been eating them for more than 30 years. They are delicious with ice cream.

Be very careful to eat only ripe ones: the unripes taste like wood pulp and dry your mouth.

They had loads of these in Asda yesterday - 3 for £1 I think. I love them, a Japanese friend of mine introduced them to me, she used to eat them for breakfast.
  • Yup- Sharon fruit.
I teach cookery to 5 and 6 year olds. One of our 'recipes' is dips and crudit!s, and we make a sweet dip and slice fruit to dip into it. I love looking round the greengrocer's, choosing unusual- looking things to feed them! Often we have Sharon fruit and they almost always love them. Some of my adult helpers are new to them too, so Meri- you're not alone :D
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • (If you're interested, my favourite fruit is guanabana- I'm not sure whether it has an English name, or even if it's sold over here:o. Scrummy :D)

They taste very different when they are very ripe and less ripe. I like them both ways.
