How to download texts from mobile phone to PC?

How do I download sms messages from my mobile phone to my pc? I was in the US earlier in the year and send a lot of texts home. Now I need to clear them to free up space on my phone, but looking at them, they form a diary of my trip and I should like to retain them.

Its an LG phone, on the Orange network.

SMS back up and restore is a good free app, saves the sms as .xml files which can be transfered elsewhere (does not save mms though).
