Well I'm fully comp but my wife is only 3rd party so I guess that rules out any insurance claims on our behalf

How does that work? Isn't she on your policy? If she isn't, you may have an even bigger problem.

Fair enough. Still not sure why she couldn't get out of the car.

Where did the incident happen? We can find the junction on Googleearth.

Junction of Ravenscroft Avenue, London, with Golders Green Road.

Just checked on googlemaps and it appears there are road markings of some nature.

She is on my policy - but I thought as the main driver I was the only one who was fully comp, and she was only 3rd party.

Everybody on the policy should have the same level of cover.

I think you're confusing it with the "driving other cars" extension.

I know the junction. Definitely standard give way.

Sorry mate, wifey was in the wrong.

No - your wife will have the same cover as you (though may not have the same use - eg. you may have commuting or business cover whilst she has sdp use, or any other different use you chose when adding her to your policy).

But any claim (from either side) will result in your ncd being impacted (unless it's protected)
  • Thanks everyone for your help/advice.

I've just discovered the silver lining in this cloud.:)

I had a look at my insurance policy (don't have a hard copy, it's stored as a PDF online) and to my horror discovered that I'm not actually covered to drive other cars. (I'd always had this with previous insurers so, stupidly, assumed it was included.)

...And there was me planning two work trips up the M1 this week in my mum's car. Phew.

(NB. Anyone anticipate any issue with me adding this to my policy while also informing them of the claim? two different phone numbers TBH)

The incident today won't affect it, though the issue may be that your insurer no longer offers it!

So you were going to make two business trips with just third party cover. Priceless.
