Back to the original post...

Just a quick warning that Cafe Rouge have changed their menu and no longer accept tesco rewards vouchers if you have purchased one of their 'plats rapides'
I think it's a damn cheek, actually, as they're hardly cheap at £9.50 for a baguette and fries. I just got caught out and ended up having to pay £20 cash when I was expecting to hand over my vouchers. (It is stated on the new menu in small print but I didn't notice)

This happened to me too, I have to say I didn't notice it on the menu and only found out when I came to pay.

Slightly annoying actually as I am now left with the vouchers and there is nothing else from the menu that I would have.

Luckily they can also be used at Strada and Bella Italia.

The inference from the above is that only the full price items are sufficiently overpriced for them to be able to afford to supply them for vouchers that have a face value of four times what you effectively paid for them. (Actually, more realistically, two times as no one with any sense would redeem them other than when there was a 'double' offer available.)

I make a point of never using places that have this 4x deal with Tesco (unless using vouchers) as it would seem to indicate that they are somewhat overpriced if you pay full whack.

Is it not a pound per point though? To get a quid club card voucher you have to spend £100 in tesco.

So you never go to Pizza express unless you pay by tesco vouchers? Seems quite a restrictive policy

Surely the whole point of the vouchers is to get people in who might not otherwise go there? Had it not been for the vouchers I would not have gone to Cafe Rouge and there would have been an empty table. I don't know how much they get from Tesco but don't forget they make money on drinks. £2.25 for a diet Coke which probably cost them pennies.

    No, it's £1 per 100 points.

But that's not the issue. It's what the effective value of the standard voucher is. £1 as standard in Tesco, £2 on their double promotions.

Not at all. I would rarely eat in a 'chain' restaurant anyway. I much prefer independent eateries.

Yes, but the fact that they restrict what you can use the vouchers for would seem to indicate that some things (those for which the vouchers are ineligible) do not have nearly such a margin as items that you can use the vouchers for.

I just prefer to give my custom to restaurants that do not indulge in these pricing shenanigans. They generally produce much better food than the chains, anyway.

I have never had issues when using my vouchers in Cafe Rouge, I always let them know i am paying by vouchers before we eat. They always say what we can use them on. The main menu and the quick menu. I always use my Tesco vouchers for eating out. We have £160 worth this year, Ate out at Bella and Rouge otherwise if i had to pay cash then i would go elsewhere.

For every pound you spend at tesco you get a point? So pound per point?

  • and always go with tesco vouchers but tend to the expensive stuff as it is "free" and makes me feel that I have somehow won on the deal. OK, I purchase a lot at Tesco but you have to shop somewhere and they do offer that fabby 4x deal on the vouchers.
I cannot see the point of going somewhere with vouchers and getting something cheap when you could have something 'better'.

Generally, although there are quite a lot of points to be had with various offers. See here if you want all the details.

On the input side, but that's not what this thread is about. You need 100 points to get a £1 voucher. Although that can be exchanged at various multiples - up to 4x - for various other vouchers.
