Recession Heating - Is New Dyson Hot The Answer?

Just looked up Dyson Hot Reviews on Amazon and product details to see if I could work out whether tv ads about 'revolutionary' cheap er heating system were true as Id always read on here that most were the same - and it turned out it wasnt that great after all - and with a hefty £300 quid price tag! I mean, what planet are they on with a Triple Dip recession coming after xmas? Soooo grateful to the top reviewer for saving me.... didnt have that exorbitant amount anyway!

Anyone on here got one and can advise technically on running costs etc? Will run out and get a £9.99 value one for the mo , until i hear back!

Yep, you'd be much wiser to buy a £20 fan/convector heater and spend the extra £280 on running it. It will cost exactly the same price to run as the dyson

Over priced and over hyped, no more efficient than any other electric heater.
It may distribute heat round the round more quickly than another design but thats all.
Typcal of Dyson trying to be the 'Apple' of home appliances, and enriching himself having sacked all the production workers in the UK.
The Advertising Standards Authority should have a look at the misleading advert.

The ASA does generally not go looking for misleading adverts.
You can, and should report them.

    It's not a difficult, or time-consuming process.

For example was a decision against one of the many expensive heater people.
" We therefore did not consider that it was necessarily the case that the advertiser's electric heating system would be cheaper to run than gas central heating when providing similar amounts of heat for the home. Because we had not seen robust, comparative evidence that demonstrated that the product was cheaper to run than gas central heating, we concluded that the ad was misleading."

    Complain people!

    .

ahh penrhyn. Speaking theoretically again? I presume you don`t have one

I bought one and in fact now have two. They are utterly amazing, both stylish and efficient in the area targeted by the warm air. They were also fantastic cool fans during the hot days in summer. Mind I only speak as I find and my house is well insulated

They won`t suit everyone of course but our days of £9.99 fan heaters are long gone

You are entitled to your opinion, but all electric heaters are 100% efficient. If you are happy with your purchase then fine. This is as you know a money saving site, and £300 for a 2 kw fan heater is a luxury.

So do you think that the 'theory' is incorrect? The implication is that you think these heaters re-write the laws of thermodynamics!

Without question they produce EXACTLY the same amount of heat as a £9.99 fan heater, for the same running costs.

When you say 'our days of £9.99 fan heaters are long gone' do you mean just for yourself? because there are loads of sub £9.99 fan heaters on sale

If style is important, why not get an Aga?
  • £600 (cost of 2 of these heaters) would pay the electricity bill of the average household for approx. 20 months. What a bargain Dyson has brought to market. :p
  • I can see these ending up like the Dyson washing machines...overpriced and undersold.
    I hate migraines.

It's been said on here before but it doesn't make it true.
It may be close to 100% and certainly closer than a gas heater where a certain percent is going up your flue but they cannot be 100% ....

    THE BASIC PHYSICS
    1) Some of the electricity in the heating coil goes into magnetism not heat.
    SLIGHTLY NON BASIC PHYSICS
    2) A heating element is not A perfect black body.
I just deleted the rest as it strikes me anyone with a post grad in physics wouldn't make the statement and anyone without one has a lot of catching up and maths to learn before it can be explained.....

    Try Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_body
A electric heating element is NOT a perfect black body.

However much more important ... a fan heater has a fan.... this takes up some energy... not much of a 2kW heater but more than 0%

The use of the heater means efficiency is not a simple conversion of electricity into heat anyway....
    It matters HOW its used.....
Do you keep your central heating at 15 and then want to top up to 20 in a room if you arrive home early? Do you have a home office you heat sometimes or want to heat the loo ?

No point using a low power convection heater or storage heater in the loo because by the time its heated up (assuming normal bowel movements) you already flushed and left.... the convection heater will then continue to heat the empty room..... although you could drag it out with you into the living room (I suppose while it cools down?) Whereas the fan heater will have heated the room more quickly (using more kWh) but have heated the room at least while you were reading the MSE forum on your iPad/Laptop on the loo.

Fan heaters and halogen heaters are more directional than convection so you can heat you without having to equalise the whole room.... or if its not even a room (why do you think pubs use halogen heaters outside? its because they are more efficient, they cool very quickly when they are switched off..... but just try the effect of sitting in a garden 3' away from a convection heater....? Almost all of the heat will be lost...
