hello please help me SOMEONE!!! i have just bought a bungalow and the only form of heating is terrable costly storage heaters i want to get rid of them and have a gas supply fitted. the house has not got a supply and the nearest road is @ 40 foot away where the main supply is. I am waiting for an inspector from Fulcrum connections( part of the national grid) to get back to me with a quote. Has anyone else had a gas supply fitted and how much did it cost?

thank you very much, lmp

  • There is no set cost for this type of work. It will be a calculation based on distance.

It would help reduce the cost if you had neighbours looking to do the same

Bear in mind that if you go to a shipper for the supply (British Gas, NPower etc) they will pass the request on to the gas transporter (National Grid etc) who'll still end up doing the work for you.

Whether or not it'll be more cheaper/expensive is another thing, i'd get one quote direct from National Grid and another through your shipper to see how they compare. ;)

Well, the length doesn't meet the requirement for the standard charge, so you'll have to have a bespoke quotation.

This is designed and then quoted depending on several factors.

The size and type of main it's coming off
How much gas you need, determining the size of the service
The surface category (road, footpath, verge etc).

You'll have to wait for the quote. The price could vary from a few hundred to 4-figures or more. When you get it, you could run it past me and i could see if there's a way of making it cheaper. But i'm not on here all the time.

Also you said you're nothern, so if you're in the North West you're covered by National Grid, if it's Yorkshire and the North East this is Northern Gas Networks. The price does differ depending what area you're in.

Sorry i can't be of more help!

Also, i forgot to mention, if most of the pipe is to be laid on your land (private) then you can save a good chunk of the cost by excavating the trenches yourself. (or pay a nephew a few bob to do some digging!)

cheers slinx for the advice but my nephew is only two and a half and we are only just doing ABC. !!! anyway the trench situation, its a bout half and half i cant dig for my life and if i did id probably puncture a water pipe. I just hoping and preying that it not going to cost more than £1500 and even thats a lot, also im in manchester i have been in touch with the national grid and they dont put pipes in for the distance i need and put me in touich with their sister company fulcrum, so i will wait and see i will keep you posted though ta for the advice. still a very cold manc !!!

Glad i can help, got a bit more info which may be of interest.

You can actually claim compensation under certain circumstances. If you're quotation is late, if they don't start work when they say they will and if the don't finish when they say they will.

Also, if your quote is stupidly high you could request an accuracy challenge. This means someone at Grid will have a look at it's accuracy to make sure Fulcrum are doing their work properly!

By the way, I'm not some sad guy who thinks about gas 24/7 you know.....honest! I'm bored at work and it gives me summat to do!

Or maybe i'm protesting too much......:D

In the evidence given into the enquiry over LPG prices (the companies own the tank and so have the consumers over a barrel or tank if you prefer) the figures for new gas connections since privatisation were pathetic ie short-termism had set in and the only significant new connections were those done for developers with deep wallets.

35 years ago I tried to get a connection, admittedly over a distance of 200 yards and was quoted 1400; that is 20K in today's money. I could have done it myself (see water supply) for 150 GBP of yellow plastic pipe plus 50 GBP to hire a trenching machine, but I had a problem over wayleaves (just ignore it if the landowner has gone AWOL). Basically the then North Thames Gas did not want to know me.

Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

    Harry.
