laptop could be power supply, or psu connection, or more serious motherboard.

desktop, does it have a video connection on the motherboard, or a card - ie have you added a new card, or swapped the existing one out? could also be power supply. does anything come on the monitor at all?

  • We bought a new video card and fitted it (dad did this) and no affect. Monitor gets a no signal message on it.

but did you replace or add it, and connect the monitor to the correct one, if it has 2 now

double check there aren't 2 outlets on the back, it would be highly unusual for a new card fitted correctly to also have no output, if the machine is making all the normal startup noises. nothing comes on screen at all, no bios messages?

has the machine been moved recently?

if the video card has a fan, check it's spinning

  • As far as I am told it comes up on screen saying no signal. There is one card slot, before going wacky it hadn't been moved and the fan on the new card is spinning.

does it go through the motion of booting, disk light on for a couple of minutes, then intermittent flashing

does the ethernet light come on, on the machine and router, assuming it is plugged into a router?

try hold F8 down just after booting, then enter.

to reiterate, some machines have a monitor connection on the motherboard too.

  • As far as I am told it goes through the motions.

    I will try that tomorrow.

The motherboard connect to the monitor is disabled I am told

make sure the monitor is plugged into the correct video outlet on the back, and try both outlets.

failing that, take the video card out, and use the onboard one.

    try F8

test the monitor and lead on another machine
