New Laptop needed

Right somehow, don't ask me how because I am at a loss myself, my brother has both his laptop and desktop break on him  Unfortunately he needs some form of computer to do his studies (film and media student at college) so really does need a new one quickly to run editing software. Can anyone suggest a cheap adequate laptop, ideally something I can purchase a long warranty with.

Thank you for reading this.

    how have they broken

  • Well the laptop just won't boot up so I am presuming it's ended its life. The desktop is powering up but won't connect with the monitor. Now there is nothing wrong with the monitor, we tried it with my laptop, and so we presumed it was the graphics card. So a graphics card was bought today and it still won't work. I am just thinking is it just gonna be simpler and cheaper to just purchase a new piece of equipment.

just wont boot up covers a lot of possibilities, including software which is fixable

wont connect with the monitor, does it whir up?

  • Nope no whir. I am not a computer expert. I know how to use a laptop to do what I need but fixing things is not my area of expertise.

The laptop just won't turn on at all I am told, even when plugged in to a power point.

unusual for 2 things to fail at the same time, its possible they are repairable with more information, but if you want to buy a new one, post a budget and/or look at some of the other "which laptop" threads, the choice is vast

  • Laptop wise what would I need to look at to see whats wrong, this one is the most important so far. It had editing software, coursework etc on it. If I could fix it myself with some guidance that would be preferable.

    this one?

it's likely the hard disk on both machines are ok, so the data is probably recoverable, using a usb caddy is the easiest option.

editing software probably would need reinstalling

suggest using this to backup in future

  • I am a bit confused, how would I recover the data if I can't get the laptop to even power up? (I may sound a bit silly but I don't usually try this)

do you have these machines in front of you? what models are they, how old?

is the fuse in the plug ok on both machines, does the power supply light up? does anything light up at all when you press the power button on both?

have you tried taking the battery out?

you would buy a usb hard disk caddy for £2-3, take hard disk out, put it in the caddy, and attach to another machine via the usb connection.

  • Haven't got them in front of me. I know the laptop is a 3 to 4 year old Lenova (I think that's how you spell it) and the desktop is an Acer that's 5 years old roughly. Fuses are fine, the desktop tower starts working but doesn't seem to be working with the monitor but like I said the monitor is a working monitor. Laptop has had the battery out. Laptop has nothing that lights up as far as I know
