Car Insurance 17 Year Old

Hi, I have just got my first car- an 05 Vauxhall Corsa SXI and am looking to insure it. I have not passed my test yet, and have been looking around at prices.

I am only a few months away from passing, but the sites ask what license I have, which at the moment is a Provisional. What happens when I pass? Because it seems like all of the cheap quotes cost more than average when you have a full license.

What happens if I pay for a year of insurance with my provisional, and then pass? Can I keep that insurance for the rest of the year, or do I have to continue paying for it, and pay for a full uk license insurance as well until the year of provisional insurance is up? Or am I just completely wrong? :p

Can someone please explain this to me, and also if you could suggest any particular options that could make it cheaper for me (I have seen the article about it on here already), and any good insurers for people my age?

Thanks!

If you buy insurance now for a year whilst you have a provisional, when you pass your test you call the company and give them the details, they will amend the policy for you and you will have to pay for any increase in price for the remaining months of your policy :)

Make sure you have a parent or another older driver on it as an additional insured user.
But I think on that Corsa (if it's a 'hot' one), it's going to be ruinously expensive on a full licence-probably more than the value of the vehicle for at least your first year. If you can get cover at all.

You can get insurance that only covers you whilst learning. As soon as you pass then its void.

Or you can get a policy as a learner and then update them when you pass. Have you managed to get it for less than £2000 ??

Dont try and cheat the system. Read all the posts where they got caught and its costing them thousands.

Lad on my club site had an accident on Thursday. Seems he failed to declare all the modifications to his car. But the 3rd party picked up on this and said the tinted windows were to blame and he couldnt see clearly through them.
Letter arrived special delivery on Friday. Insurance cancelled. Advised him to get legal assistance ASAP.

That was the basics of his brief post. He has not been online since.

But he now stands to lose his car and possibly facing HUGE costs..

Even a minor whiplash or bit of pain that requires a couple of physio treatments could see the insurer paying out £2000.

  • hi op

when my partner was 17 and learning to drive she got a 306 td and i was a named driver better driving history licence over 3 1/2 years ect.
Iirc she was with budget insurance on a provisional licence with l plates.
when she passed her test we phoned the insurance company and told them she had just passed her test and they charged us £20 to change the policy.

she got the car on her 17th birthday (applied for provisional before her birthday) insured it and she passed 3 weeks before her 18th birthday.
try explaining to an insurance company that you have had your licence a month but have 1 years ncb.

try getting a parent ect on your policy because a corsa sxi at 17 is going to cost you the earth in insurance

TBH if i was you buy a cheap diesel (106 1.5 d) or a 1.0 corsa for a couple of hundred pounds and run it for a year on a tpf&t policy.
    do a pass plus course
get a policy with one of them black box things installed.

    hope this helps

Third party is not always cheaper. So do quotes with both.

Some assume 3rd party cover = more risk because you must have a cheap wreck you dont care about and drive it accordingly.

Ah okay, yeah it seems like that is quite a common way that the insurance companies are scamming us! They're cheap when you have the provisional and the jump way above average when you pass!

Okay, will do. When I add my dad it goes up for some reason, and when I add my mum it goes down, so I'll just have her added.

Yeah it is quite expensive :/

Ah right, when I say that I have a Provisional License the cheapest I can get it is £850, and with a Full UK License the prices vary from £2000 - £3000...

Yeah, I didn't think it was worth taking the risk of lying to them! That's just convinced me even more, I definitely won't do that.

    Hey!

Okay, do you think it would be worth just not 'passing' until I am 18? I could just get an adult to sit next to me for a bit? :p
Wouldn't be very practical though, and it would be very annoying!

So you didn't have to pay an extra when it was changed from Provisional to Full? Just a one off £20 charge?

With my mum listed as a driver it brings the price down a bit, so that's good.

My dad bought the car for me yesterday as a surprise though, so I can't really change it now.

Out of all the websites I checked, only one asked me if I had done a Pass Plus course, so is it worth doing one? And I found some quotes that didn't install a box that were cheaper, so I'd rather not have one tbh, but if I find one that makes it a lot cheaper I guess I'll have to go for it!

    Thank you :)

Yeah fair point! Tried a few different sites, and they all seem to vary on this, so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

It's not a scam to charge you more with a full licence, when you pass you are more of a risk because you can go driving on your own without supervision.

  • It just isn't worth having a car full stop. Think how many taxi fares you can get for £2000.

Well it would cost me £1,350 a month to get to and from work in a taxi, but I take your point!
