Existing broadband connection?

We have just moved into our first house and we have set up a new account with BT and have been given a new phone number. However, when I use this number to try and get broadband on many ISPs websites it says that there is already an existing broadband connection on that phone number and I need to get a MAC code to enable us to migrate. How do I find out which ISP the previous owners used, and how do I fix the problem?
