No it does not work the same way, If I want to install software for iOS I need Apple's approval
If I want to install software for Andriod I don't need Google's approval, I don't need to use their app store and potentially don't need an app store full stop.

This is what people mean when they talk about lock in.

Whether it's relevant or not for normal consumers is a different question

I think for the most part you should assume we're talking about 'normal consumers' on a forum like this. The lock-in on Android is just as bad as the lock-in on Windows Phone 8 or iOS for the vast vast majority of people.

To be fair, you do come across as though you live worshipping the Apple logo.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Thing is, I know my device, I know what it does, and I know because I took an interest in how things work for my device. I also know android devices because I have/had one too. I know what that does, and again because I took an interest in it.

Just because I choose an apple device over an android does not make me a fanboy/girl/desperate/fashion follower/idiot with too much money. What it does make me is someone who knows their device and can thus offer opinions on threads which ask ipad or nexus. You can note that no where did I say AMG, apple is so kewl, totally, like, go buy one right now, cus it's just the best out there FULL STOP¬!!!!oneone11 (etc).

What I have done is given an opinion on my device that I know, apple or otherwise. I did match it up to an android based tablet, and I prefer my ipad, I prefer the apps (some of which are only available on ios) and frankly I prefer that it seems to be a more updated (in some of my own apps) platform. Both OS updates, and also app updates. One particularly, as I'm thoroughly addicted to Where's My water. I gave up on waiting for updates on my android phone, where they've come pretty regularly through ios. That alone doesn't make me a fanboy.

But this is the problem though. The wannabe new buyers of every apple product out there, computer, laptop, tablet, phone and thus spouting to anyone who will listen with their proud apple badges are the fanboys. Seems like anyone who owns anything apple will get lumped into that category now by people so desperate to be the first to cry it

God forbid that I told the OP to:

Take yourself into a John Lewis, or (gah!) pc world, currys and sit and play for a bit with both tablets, and see which one you prefer to use.
    And that:

then really it should come down to which you prefer to use and feel comfortable with.

I guess I meant take themselves down to the apple store, buy a nice mac, take it home, set it up, surf to the apple online store then buy a nice ipad 4, oh and the mini too whilst at it, and hey why not, go get an iphone 5. Because dey is sew kewl right.:rotfl:

Besides which, going by your username,,,, who's the apple lover? :P

mrochester - no, I think you're being unfair and there is a distinct difference. All the mobile OSs have an 'App Store'. That's the place MOST consumers, as you rightly say, will download stuff from. But, no matter how difficult it is to get stuff from elsewhere, Google ALLOWS you to do this on the device you bought. Apple FORBIDS it. You must acknowledge there's a vast difference there.

Of course, but for 99% of people, it's irrelevant.
  • It's worth noting that any recently released Android-based tablet will allow you to plug it into your Windows or Mac OS X-based computer and drag and drop files to and from the device. In Windows 7, this is natively supported and the device will show up in Computer as any other (MTP) device like a camera. Older versions of Windows may need an extra install to allow them to support it. In Mac OS X, you have to download a small utility but the effect is the same. On iOS, you have to either sync files to/from the device via the Internet (iCloud or Dropbox being the main common) or via iTunes.

At the end of the day you're still locked into the Android ecosystem as you can't take your apps to another platform, which is exactly the same for the other platforms out there.

I can run Android x86 on parallels and have virtual windows on my desktop.

I can use Android player on Blackberry play book If I had one.

I was reading about this company who reckon they can run something like Android player on a good few other platforms...

Try making them work on iOS, Symbian or Windows Phone!

mrochester - is that an actual complaint? Buying an Android phone means you can also run Android apps?
You can only run Windows programs in Windows, and petrol cars won't run on diesel.
I forgot about the Amazon store, which I've installed on my phone with very clear instructions from Amazon. Great example. MOST users of Android now have easy access to 2 stores.
Another example of Apple's 'iron grip' over YOUR device is removing Google Maps and installing their own inferior app in its place. Makes you feel like your phone is not your own...
