Nexus or new small iPad

I am totally confused. I know nothing about these things and mainly want one just for general purposes, nothing flashy in the way of games. I can see these are both easier to cart around than an iPad4 which does look very nice. But which is best (impossible question I guess). Which is the best for a general user. And would they both run Skype for phones?

I will start by saying I am not an i anything fan. I have also been anti tablet, I consider them a bit of a luxury toy.
My daughter has just purchased, after joint research, a Nexus 7 32gb and benefited from the recent price reduction.
I have to say it is a nice bit of kit. Seems well put together. good sharp screen. Pretty fast in operation. She is really happy with it, surfing, email, facebook, catchup, games, films etc.Picks up wifi easily.
3G wasn't on her wish list but that is now available too.
If I could really justify the spend it would certainly be my first choice."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Very happy with my Nexus 7. Bit of an indulgence, but its cheap and you are not locked into Apple's closed system or paying their hyped up prices..That gum you like is coming back in style.0

They're good tablets in their own right, it would really come down to personal preference and in the case of the ipad mini, whether you want to pay more of a premium price.
You'll get both users who will say theirs because of this and as already posted the common response is you'll not be locked into apple. Well if you go for the samsung, you'll be locked into google play (android apps), then if you go for the ipad, you'll be locked into ios store (apple apps).
I will say outright that having used an android and ios, I prefer the apple apps, they seem to work better, and in the recent case of an update breaking the game for almost everyone, two days later is another update which fixes it. Fast, and easy which is what I want, what every one wants.
I have an ipad mini, and I love it, but then I had a 2, and knew I would love the mini as it's just far more portable now.
Take yourself into a John Lewis, or (gah!) pc world, currys and sit and play for a bit with both tablets, and see which one you prefer to use. The sizes are not directly comparable, as the ipad mini is 7.9, compared to the nexus at 7, but if you are a "virgin" to tablets, and have neither preference, nor dedication on already bought apps (phone, or tablet (aka android store, or apple store)) then really it should come down to which you prefer to use and feel comfortable with.
They both will also run skype.0 -
Thank you, Lifeforms, that's really helpful. Much appreciated.0

not being funny but you class 2 days to fix an update as acceptable? really?
the update should have been rolled back to a working one within a few hours so that the problem doesn't affect anyone and a updated update then developedDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
It comes down to either android based apps, or ios based apps. There is no interchangeability between the two. You are tied to either android or ios, doesn't matter if I'm a "fanboy" (wrong sex anyhoo) that is correct. So as much as people meep about being stuck to apple, it works the exact same way for android based tablets. Frankly if you have to throw in a fanboy to justify your comment, then whom is the one, desperately clinging at straws?
And yes 2 days is fine, considering the platform of testing that needed to go on, reprogramming and going through apple checks to get approval to go onto the store.
Anything less is unrealistic imo. I've seen far longer periods on both devices.0 -

No it does not work the same way, If I want to install software for iOS I need Apple's approval
If I want to install software for Andriod I don't need Google's approval, I don't need to use their app store and potentially don't need an app store full stop.
This is what people mean when they talk about lock in.
Whether it's relevant or not for normal consumers is a different question0
