Yes needs to be pulled in for faxes

    ---

Annual line rental of £132 needs to be balanced against value of any lost business ...

I have recently moved over to a fax 2email program instead , but to be honest faxes seem to be out of fashion these days anyway

How would customers, old and new, fax to my friend if she removes the second line, which is the telephone number printed on the vehicles and all paperwork? She would love to cut down on her bill as long as she can still receive the faxes.
A second line is different to dial up internet! I have not suggested she cuts off the second line.

Dial up internet is just that. She uses her computer modem to dial up for Internet access. Stopping that does not stop her from using the modem for other things like fax.

Is she (and you) under the impression that stopping paying her ISP for dial up internet will somehow stop her sending faxes from her PC???

There is a way to keep the 2nd phone number but only pay bills for 1 phone line. Subscribe to BT CallSign service, this allows you to set up additional numbers on the same line, however when you request this service you need to ensure that BT will transfer the 2nd line's number to a BT Callsign service (I think they should be able to do so). It costs much less than paying 2nd line rental (roughly £1.50 per month). Sending faxes will be unaffected, you simply plug the modem into the 1st line and use that instead.

Yes, this is exactly what we thought... I guess we were wrong then?

Are you aware of being able to use winfax with broadband and the dial up modem?

Yes, you should be able to use the modem on the broadband line. When you send a Winfax message it simply dials the recipient's fax machine, not an isp.

You two must be blond.

The only common thing between dial up internet and sending faxes from a PC is the dial up modem. The modem is your property and you don't have to pay an ISP to allow you to use it!

That would be a bit like saying that you must pay Sky, for example, when you want to watch your own DVDs/videos.

When you send a fax, whether via a conventional fax machine or PC modem, you connect to the same place; that is the destination. It does not connect to an ISP in order to send the fax.

You use Winfax with a dialup modem. That does not stop you from being connected to the internet with a broadband modem at the same time and on the same line or on any other line for that matter.

If BT will transfer the 2nd number to CallSign, and the incoming calls can be split, that sounds pretty good

I'd still aim to have a fax-to-email number eventually, so as not to need the PC on all the time.

I have free 0870 numbers which are hardly used (about 3 a year). I haven't checked eFax monthly charges for ordinary area code numbers, which would be a lot more sociable for more use. VoIP providers like Voipfone and Voiptalk charge a couple of quid a month and could port in an existing BT number for a modest one-off fee.
