Iphone 4 repair options: power (sleep/wake) button kaput (18 months old)

Rather annoyingly, my On/Off Sleep/Wake button has ceased to work and I'm mulling what to do.
The phone is out of warranty, unfortunately, as I got it in June last year although I would've expected it to last at least 2 years until parts broke/stopped working   . Does anyone think there's any chance of getting Apple to repair it? Not sure I can be arsed to book a genius appointment and attempt to argue the toss with a blue-shirted "Genius" though; I believe consumer law says that the onus on me to prove that it's broken due to normal wear and tear after 1 year.
Some initial cursory research yielded this YouTube video which indicated that it could possibly be fixed by inserting a bit of card just below the button on the inside of the phone so I bought an iphone repair kit on ebay for £4 but it didn't fix it so I think the fault lies with electronic switch not the button itself. Although there's a guide on ifixit.com to replace the button, it's rated difficult and appears quite involved, which I am assuming would be the same to replace the switch even though there's isn't a specific guide for that repair on ifixit.
Which all leads me to consider an iphone repair specialist. Being based in London, I am fortunate in that there's more choice of places to go plus some of them offer a Repair-While-You-Wait service or at least same day which would be the most convenient. If anyone has had any experiences of using a similar service, please feel free to post it up - a quick search has brought up the following companies (not an exhaustive list): Looking at around ~£40.

Its not out of warranty. Apple has to give 2 years now:

Thanks for your reply.
That says:Repair or replacement coverage for Defects present when customer takes delivery

I had this done on a 3GS on a same-day basis for £35 using an independent repairer. It is still going strong! Just search for comments on repairs made by your selected repairer - then choose.0

Try going into settings, general and down to accessibility and switch on assistive touch which then puts a sleep/wake onscreen button and if you shut the phone off just connect it to a power supply to bring it back on
hubby's phone had this problem and this was a better option than £100 to replace. Hope this helps.
The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0
