Drill part way through the wall from one side, then drill the remainder from t'other side.

As said before, you'll need a pilot hole. Alternatively, drill from one side, while somebody else looks at the other side. Once the drill pokes it's little head through, start from the other side.

    A VERY VERY dusty job

Use a good sds drill. Do not use it on hammer. Dont try to force it through, let the drill do the work. Make sure the drill has a good clutch on it or you will break your wrist if it binds. Dust mask, goggles etc.

Every single word, especially the clutch.

Thanks for all the info. I'm hiring from Speedy Hire so not sure if its SDS or not. Will ask all relevant questions when I pick it up
Actually an SDS is NOT what you want because the SDS function only works when you are using it on hammer and as already mentioned you musn't use hammer. If you are hiring hire a proper core drill like this one:

    be30v3Q53P87FRYvxgEHu2rIHN-trdwH8mrC1go4EQHbGBED3qtk0EAP_rHfxDxvXSy7WBP9xFtwcnCMhbf64XHw2SHz1q3QYqlXNWCA7T6fJ0J3tu6t2Q3CAe87V_EDM70dhHtiB1P6Bw3jr9KgP6wK2A

which you can guarantee will have a clutch.

Make sure that you let the bit do the work and don't force it. Its i,portant that the drift (the guide rod in the centre of the core bit) goes straight into the pilot hole and is kept straight. If it goes off line you'll be in trouble. Same goes for trying to do it half way from one side and half way from the other - it don't work.

    Cheers.

Drilled quite a few of these holes myself and I reckon that the bloke on this Youtube video gives good guidance.

Don't be tempted to do it of a step ladder (even if only 3 or 4 steps high)

Set up some good strong trestles high enough that you are driling at just above waist height.

If you are dry core cutting its worth stopping every so often to clear the dust from around the bit, ideally with a builders vac or similar. This prevents the cluctch from activating all the time and gets you through much faster. As keystone says check what you've hired as the proper coring machines are lower speed higher torque so also much less likely to spin out of control.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
  • Thanks for the advice. Drilled from the outside with minimum mess on inside. Done and dusted within 60 mins

    Thanks
  • Excellent. And thanks for letting us know.
