Have just been round 2 local town centres and an outlet. Am in retail - been an area manager for 5 years and a store manager prior to that, so got some awkward questions applying for 10 hr sales assistant vacancies.

Have emailled all the retail agencies I know, and applied for about 30 jobs online now. Now looking at different industries and things I think I could convince people I can do without having the relevant industy experience for it!

I think looking at different industries may not be a bad idea - after all, if you apply for a job that is slightly more junior, you can explain yourself by saying you want to get out of retail and into [insert sector here], so are prepared to take a pay cut for the opportunity to prove yourself. You're obviously looking for any job that pays the bills, but taking a pay cut for a sideways step will probably attract less scrutiny.

I know you're in a horrible situation, but you sound really positive and like you're taking all the right steps, so I don't really have much to add. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Waiting is horrible, but hopefully you can talk to some agencies on Monday and get your name back on their books.
  • Its worth noting ,in my experience, that most people who sign on sign off in 3 months so it not going to a long term thing

Its all down to attitude so you won't have a problem.

I was in a similar situation in January so I can relate, its not nice and coming up to Xmas must be much harder, we returned to work after Xmas to discover the company closed, we all where paid off, no notice and no money, I literally did not have 2 penny's to rub together being after Xmas and being due to be paid that week.

That same day I applied for JSA, it took 3 weeks to come through and because we rent applied for housing benefit, it took much longer to come through, about 6 weeks. I then got onto CCCS, they where very helpful and reassuring and put us on a DMP for our debts so it was one less thing to worry about.

Lots of places are taking on now for Xmas and a lot do not advertise online or in the job centre, get pounding that pavement with CV in hand ASAP.

If you have a company car then maybe you were involved in sales. Getting a job is all about selling - explaining how you meet the needs of the employer; in writing at the application stage ( CV + email / letter or application form ) and then verbally at the interview stage.

If you have not been in this situation then you need a complete package - try a book. How to get a job in a recession 2012 looks pretty good ( no I'm not the author ) but there are lots of others. My local library has a good selection.

    Al the best

Thanks guys, did some more pavement pounding yesterday, spoke to a couple of agencies and have a meeting with one on thurs. Got my interview at job centre today - something I am not looking forward to. Have only ever been inside a job centre to interview other people before so this is weird - and petrifying to be honest.

Did car boot on Sunday which was a bit poor but at least I came out with more money than I started with. Have got a lot of stuff up for sale on eBay and Facebook just to try and trickle some money in.

I feel constantly on edge as if there should be something else that should be doing to find a job. :(

Stop looking at this as a failure and start seeing it as an opportunity, get on some career websites and start thinking about planning ahead. Think about your networks and contacts, get in touch with people you know who respect you and let them know you are now looking for work.

Register for this website and work through some of the sections, do the DNA quiz, it's good fun.

Google is your friend, start researching companies in your area, find out what they do and think about whether you would like to work there. look at company websites not just job search sites.

Hi Gibson123, I know I need to pull myself together and get on with it - and I'm trying to! Had 3 interviews and a telephone interview last week, got an interview and a second interview arranged for this week so far.

Have applied for jobs that are in the same sector as my previous experience, but also for plenty of things that are completely different! - while relating them to my experience obviously!

Company car was collected at the end of the week - I had a slight nervous breakdown at the time, but at least its over and done with. Getting used to public transport now, forgot how much planning it takes to go anywhere!

    Fingers crossed for next week!
