Unemployed - never been in this situation :(

My employer terminated my employement yesterday - only been there 7 months so no reason given. I feel totally lost today, Ive never been in this situation before - have worked all the way through school/uni and then ever since. I moved from one company to this one earlier in the year - bad choice obviously.

I only have one weeks notice from this company so thats only one more pay and then no more - I have a mortgage and stupidly several credit cards that need to be paid. I only applied to my mortgage company to borrow more to pay off my other debts 2 weeks ago - that wont happen now.

Have applied for over 15 jobs last night and still searching. Applied for Jobseekers this morning. And looking for a car boot to do tomorrow to clear some clutter and make a bit of cash - while I still have a company car!

Feel lost now. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there in this situation, so I apologise for the moan.

If anyone has any suggestions/ideas of what else I can do please share!

  • Hi Kez1983.
Cant offer much in the way of advice but didn't want to read & run.
My brother is out of work at the moment and he uses the employment agencies. Not sure what your field is but this may be worth a go.
    Good luck in your search!
    Back on the trains again!

Get to employment agencies straight away and get on their books, you never know when a temp job will popup for a week or two. Ring them up every now and then to check up on whether there are any jobs they will put you forward for.

You need to treat job searching as a job, do it 9-5. Tweek your CV to reflect the jobs you are applying too, incorporate the key words that are mentioned in the applications etc.

Ive emailled a couple of the agencies Ive been in contact with in the past, but they all work Mon-Fri so I'll have to be patient till monday.

Am in retail so not a great sector it be in - currently emailling anyone and everyone Ive ever worked with to see if they have vacancies. And stalking people on linkedin to see if that helps!

Why not print off some CVs and take a walk round your local shopping centre. Retail's an area where I quite often see signs up in shop windows when they are looking for staff, even if it's only temp stuff up til Christmas it will give you a bit of breathing space.

Sorry to hear that. Shred those credit cards and reduce your living costs as one never knows how long they will be out of work for. Keep yourself busy. Good luck.

On the other hand, it is coming up to Christmas and shops do take on extra staff.

Slinky you read my mind! Just been round the local 2 town centres and designer outlet. Neither town centre had anything but a couple of CV's given out at the outlet - and 2 awkward why with your experience are you applying for a 10/20 hr sales assistant vacancy conversations had. I resisted the temptation of saying - because I need a job!!!!!!! And quite politely explained my reasoning!

Unfortunately Owain Moneysaver most retaillers recruit Xmas temps in the first 2 weeks of Nov (as Ive been doing myself recently!) so have missed the boat in most places. But I'll keep trying.

Now to find myself a car boot thats still running at this time of year so start flogging my stuff at tomorrow.
  • Register with every employment agency in your area.

If you are off work this weekend, then spend your time handing out you CV to anywhere advertising that they are hiring, and also speculatively to anywhere else that you think might consider you.

What's your industry? Which roles do you have experience in?

    Hi Domino,

Have just been round 2 local town centres and an outlet. Am in retail - been an area manager for 5 years and a store manager prior to that, so got some awkward questions applying for 10 hr sales assistant vacancies.

Have emailled all the retail agencies I know, and applied for about 30 jobs online now. Now looking at different industries and things I think I could convince people I can do without having the relevant industy experience for it!

I disagree. I find jobs agencies useless especially when you ring them up asking to check. They just fob you off. They only like ringing people up with stuff, they hate people ringing them.

I've never had any luck with any of them and I've tried them all where i live. But since 90% of jobs are through one now they're unavoidable. It's like when i'm dealing with them, i know for a fact i am wasting my time but what choice do you have.
