Paypal, seller gone quiet.......

I think I might have been conned and feel like a bit of an idiot to be honest, and am looking for some advice on raising a dispute on paypal please.

I placed a wanted ad on gumtree for a toy I've been trying to find for my son (he still thinks santa can find anything) and someone answered.

We exchanged emails 4 or 5 times over a few days and she offered me a reasonable price. Also offered to sell a couple of other items, similar to what i was looking for. Only trouble was, she lives in the other end of the country and it would need to be posted. The seller offered google wallet (which I don't know anything about) to pay or direct to her bank. Obviously I didn't want to pay into her bank account directly, so I said i'd prefer paypal. She said she didn't have paypal herself, but her partner did and I could pay there.

I asked for full contact details before doing this and she gave a land line number, mobile number and email address for her partner and herself. She seemed very genuine.

So, I took the plunge and paid last Friday - 7 days ago.

I've not heard a word since. I've sent a couple of emails, but not had a reply. Looking at the history of our email exchanges before the sale, she did sometimes take a day or two to get back to me and it was always early in the morning or late at night, which makes me think she doesn't have a smart phone and might only be using her pc at home or something.

She did say she'd wait for the paypal payment to clear into the bank before sending by recorded delivery.

How long does it take to clear into the bank from paypal?

Am I worrying too soon, or should I raise dispute with paypal?

Or, should I text/phone her?

Or, have I no chance?

Thanks in advance.

How long to clear, 10 minutes with the new faster payment, but if they put it on hold, 21 hours.

Sorry, but sounds like a scam. Once you have paid in their Paypal and that has cleared (echeque - maybe), I can think of no reason what so ever, that a seller would then need to wait until it has cleared into a bank.

How did you pay, Paypal gift, or for goods?

  • I paid for goods.

The only reason I thought it was genuine, was because they offered other goods similar type (lego sets) to what I was looking for.

I'm obviously way too trusting, but I genuinely didn't think scammers would trawl wanted ads?

I have both her, and her partner's full names, which matched when the paypal payment was made.

I think I might text her tomorrow, give the benefit of the doubt that she can't access emails. If no response to that I will try the paypal dispute. How does that work?

No, not too trusting - paying for goods, smart move (not the answer I was expecting). :)

You have 45 days from payment to open a case for INR. Give them a few more days to respond, then open a case.

Thanks. I'll try and hold fire until Monday, then follow this guide.
  • It can take 5 working days for the money to clear into into a bank account, which is what they are likely to be waiting for, if they have transfered the money. Not everyone is willing to pay for the faster payments tranfers, i know i wouldn't pay for that service.
If you don't hear from her over the weekend then i think it's time to put in an item not recieved claim

It now clears into a bank account within 4 hours- there is no such thing as a faster transfer payment- it changed about 6 weeks ago.

  • Still no contact from seller.

I emailed the email address' given to me, including the one used to pay by paypal - no reply. I've sent a text to the mobile number given, no reply - goes to voicemail when I ring.

Tried land line number i'd been given. Lady answered and said i'd got the wrong number.

So, I can only conclude that i've most likely been conned. Very annoying as I really wanted the item for my son's Christmas. I've checked and re-checked the emails between us and nothing seems odd to me at all.

I've raised a dispute on paypal now.

How long should I leave this before progressing to a claim? Should I give it a couple of days to allow them to respond?

    thanks

Your choice. Personally, I think you have tried everything you can to contact them. If they don't even answer the texts, then I would escalate sooner rather than later.
