Why on earth did you spend £5k on someone else's house?

Indeed, apologies for saying that many people might regard you as bonkers...
  • The short answer to your original question, assuming you are on an AST and out of any fixed term agreed, is "No", you will not be entitled to any compensatory payment. The notice served is just a normal function of the relationship between a landlord and his/her tenant.
  • I would not of decorated etc if I had been told the situation. I was told when I signed over the keys that my tenancy agreement was for 10 years. I was not explained any of this. Yes I should of asked but I was just going on what I was told. It was my first property and didn't understand at all. I took what was said and that is why I did my home improvements as I thought I would be here for a long time. If I knew that it was temporary I would not of done any work at all. I'm sorry that you all find that I have done work on my house bonkers but it was a horrible house, I didn't have a nice fitted kitchen or nice bathroom etc.

The housing association have treated me extremely bad and because I have kicked up a fuss about the lack of hot water, my roof leaking for 7 months and no proper heating which I had to install all new heaters as they wouldn't come and fix them.

Thank you for all your advice, just needed to know if I could get any help as it's extremely stressful and upsetting losing my home this way right before Xmas

    Thanks x

Thank you, that's all I needed to know.
  • Sorry just one more question. I have spoke to the woman in charge of my property due to the fact I haven't received the notice to quit yet and she said it takes effect from the date on the papers, is this correct or is it from when I have received it? She said the notice started on Friday but I haven't received anything as of yet.

Assuming it is a section 21 .... The date on the notice PROVIDING the tenant has received it by then AND the notice follows the format prescribed by law. Otherwise a landlord could send it two days before they want the tenant to vacate! Methinks somebody forgot to send the notice on time and that is why you got that telephone call on Friday, she will be in hot water.

ETA and don't be telling them this too quickly, they will have to serve the notice again if they muck it up which gives you more time to organise alternative accommodation. If you do want to move out quicker you will need to serve your own notice on the housing association.

Elsewhere on the web you say you've spent £8k (including £1k on your kids' room ) , and that you'll be taking the decking and fences and heating with you!! Glad you've found a new house so quickly. Not sure you've learned anything though as your OH this week off to redecorate the new house doesn't seem like a great idea, really!!!

Hope you've not been claiming as a single parent all this time. ;)

I'm a member of another forum and just read a post almost identical to the OP. she very happily chatters away spilling information that she doesn't declare here. Including her partner of 4 years. (And father of her kids) who she lives with and is trying for another baby with/saving for a mortgage with/moving to Australia with while claiming tax credits as a single person.

Hadn't made the link before today. Turns out the Internet is a very small place.

    Hi,

I have tried a search but didn't come up with anything.

Basically, have lived in my rented house for 3 years 8 months. It's rented off my housing association who lease it off the home owner. It's assured short hold tenancy.

I had a phone call yesterday from the housing association stating that I have 2 months notice to vacate the property as the landlord who they lease from wants his property back.

I have done a massive amount of work on this house and spent over 5k with carpets, garden fences, decking etc just general home improvements. The house is extremely well taken care off as when I signed for the house they told me my tenancy was for 10 years, but I won't get into that.

I have found a property that I would like to rent, it's private as I don't really want to go down the council route as I don't need to as I can afford to private rent so will be taking a house I don't really need iykwim.

I have the money just about to move into this new house before Xmas so I can move out of this housing association property in 3 weeks.

I have just been told about a home loss payment of £4700 and disturbance payment of whatever amount. Now the house I am moving into needs to be decorated, I can't take my carpets as they won't fit into the rooms etc and the house needs a general update.

Basically the question I am asking is, am I entitled to the home loss payment. My housing association are absolutely useless and that's another thread on its own. They didn't tell me about these payments and help with removal and connection costs etc, well why would they.

Would there be any specific reason why I am not?

Sorry for such a long post just wanted to give you as much info as possible. Thank you for any advice given

Just in case it "mysteriously" :rotfl:disappears
