What about this recipe from Delia
http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/main-ingredient/poultry-and-game/chicken/chicken-basque.html
I have done this recipe several times for guests and everyone loved it.
For the vegetarians for could do mushroom lasagna.

I do this in the slow cooker:
Turkey
parsnips
carrots
swede
potatoes
apple
onion
a tbsp or 2 of runny honey
chicken stock
it's an adaptation of this

Obviously not for the veggies so if you did this you'd need to do something separate for them but I love it served with a dollop of cranberry sauce on topEverything is always better after a cup of tea0 -
I'm having people over for dinner on the 22nd, i've decided to do a Christmas pasta bake. Ikea do reindeer shaped pasta (i've heard M&S do Christmassy shaped pasta too) so i'm thinking turkey, mini sausages, bacon, pasta and probably some kind of tomato sauce. Not thought it through entirely yet, just an ideaBest Win 2011 - VIP Trip to Vegas

We're doing something similar with the nieces who are hopefully staying with us nearer Xmas & will be telling them they're eating Rudolph....."Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510 -
If I were you I wouldn't worry about the Christmassy food, they'll get plenty of that next day and leftovers for the rest of the week! Anyhow your house will look festive and you can play suitable music.
I would have said lasagne until I read what you said about cheese. Instead I'd go for a big pot of beef in red wine casserole. You can put carrots, mushrooms & onions in it and then just serve with a big bowl of new potatoes and plenty of bread for the delicious gravy. I've done this for up to 30 people at preChristmas party.0 -
We do Gammon in Cola on Xmas Eve with mashed potato and some veg. It's so easy
Stick your gammon in a large pan (or slow cooker)
Cover with Full Fat Cola
Bring to the boil and then simmer for as long as possible. I leave mine in the SC for 8 hours and in a pan for around 6

The mushroom part of this recipe is a really good Christmassy veggie option. I made it last Christmas.

Didn't seem to need quite as much port as the recipe called for though, and it'd work just as well with just ordinary mushrooms.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0 -
Gammon slow cooked in ginger beer...
Skint but happy with my lovely family

I suspect it's probably more economical to give them a one-pot type hot meal than lots of snacks, although I'm not sure which I'm going to do yet. We have mainly meat-eaters with a couple of vegetarians, and I wouldn't mind doing a separate meat and vegetarian dish.
The obvious sorts of things would be chilli with garlic bread, lasagne etc., but somehow they don't seem very Christmassy. Has anyone any ideas for a Christmassy version of this type of food, without breaking the bank?
We have chilli for Christmad day main meal. Ho ho ho.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Mulled wine
I love chippolata sausages on xmas eve...a taste of whats to come. Obviously not suitable for your purposes. Maybe a chilli beef ( like chilli with stewing steak instead of mince), for the vegis use a tin of heinz 5 beans instead of stewing steak. You can then do baked potatoes, rice, pittas, sour cream and cheese in the middle - yum!
