common question on here
answer is just as common
Huawei G300 Ascend for £99 - £30 disc is the answer
4" gorilla glass, 5 MP camera and 1 ghz what's not to like

Another vote for the Huawei G300. Better than any of the phones shown on that page. Fantastic value at its RRP of £99 but for a net £66 a total no brainer. get it unlocked for a fiver then you can go for a non long commitment SIM only deal from any of the networks. Totally depends on the coverage in your area but the 3 one for £6.90/mth gives you
- 200 minutes
- 5000 texts
- 500MB data

Hubby has the Xperia U and is pleased with it. I have the Xperia P and think its great.
We have had a few phones between us over the years but these two are definately the best. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you just want a basic smartphone, you should be looking at phones less than £50

Beware going for the cheapest of the cheap - particularly cheap network branded ones.
In my experience they are often terrible phones and cause their owners frequent frustrations.
Go with the MSE fav Huawei G300, HTC Radar or even a Galaxy Ace.0 -
The very cheap network branded smartphones can turn into respectable (but obviously not highest spec) smartphones once you remove the network bloatware.
Just root them and install a new rom, and voila you have a nice smartphone. I have a ZTE blade (was Orange SF) and a ZTE crescent (was T mobile vivacity)

Surely having to root and get a new rom rules out the above phones - hardly basic if they have to be prepared as such to be useable.0

Samsung Galaxy Ace would be a good bet probably. It's pretty much an iPhone 4 that says Samsung on it0

Bearing in mind that I didn't say it is exactly the same, I will re-phrase.
The Samsung Galaxy Ace looks similar iPhone 4.
Features that are noticeable for people who look for a basic smartphone, i.e screen size, camera resolution, internet speed, battery life, the Ace is a good comparison0
