that'll be specified by your cruise operator, I'd check with them.
    Actually from halifax one ts&C's(http://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/conditions_7307.asp)

5.4 If you make transactions in a foreign currency, we will change the amount to sterling at the exchange rate used by the payment system. We will charge 2.75% of the value of each foreign-currency transaction. The sterling amount shown on your statement will include this charge. If the transaction is a cash advance we also charge the cash advance handling charge shown above
    So it's 2.75% :)

Cruise ships will take sterling however if you are on an American Cruise ship sterling will be classed as foreign currency and their exchange rate will most likely not be that good.

You can charge all your drinks to your cabin and pay once with your card when settling your bill prior to disemarking. When I have used cards abroad for purchases and in hotels it normally works out at a better rate even including the transaction fee that the bank charge.

When buying foreign currency a lot of debit card issuers also charge a fee, Abbey charge so I just take the cash out and buy the currency last time I would have been charged about £7 by Abbey for using my debit card

  • buying foreign money on a credit card, is an EXTREEMLY bad idea unless your using a M+S card in marks and spencers beureu de change. Even more so if the high interest rate will be locked in under a load of 0% purchases.

Your best bet would be to withdraw money form a ATM on a card then buy the money that your not operating a slow stooze/0% on purchases on and then pay it back ASAP. Or use an overdraft.

You could use the Nationwide card to make purchases abroad and not be charged the 2.75% that Halifax and all other credit cards charge.

Doing a balance transfer to the Nationwide card would not be of any use to you and has no connection to the above.
