Maybe the DRM, the VAT, and the pricing explain why there is so much copyright infringement? That's a can of worms though so better not go there - suffice it to say that the Kindle will display some non-DRM formats.0

The answer is Yes, if you use the right software.0 -
My understanding is that you can download them to your PC from your kindle, I haven't done it yet though, then I would have thought that you could share them that way, but i may be completely wrong. If you don't ask, you don't get!

Can I just make the point that the trees are grown especially to make paper - it's like saying making bread destroys wheat.0 -
Yes but the paper does not grow magically on those trees, the trees are transported to the mill, and processed, to make pulp, then processed to make rolls, which are transported to the printers, and the ink is processed and transported. The finish product is packaged, then distributed to the warehouse, then the retailer, and then transported to the user's home. That's a lot of carbon that those newly printed trees have to process to sustain the cycle. Can I just make the point that the trees are grown especially to make paper - it's like saying making bread destroys wheat.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Book papers are a tiny part of total paper production though. Packaging paper is by far the largest sector. No free lunch, and no free laptop

One day they will realise that they don't get any extra revenue from a paper based product , e.g. I buy a book for 6.99 read it look after it and sell it for 5.00 next person does same for 4.00 next for 3.00 etc until it it end's up in a car boot sale for 0.25 then it ends up in a charity shop at 0.50 and then returns to the charity shop, until it becomes useless and (hopefully) becomes recycled. Author and publisher don't get any more money despite 50+ people read the original, so why don't they sell them for 0.99 and get 50 x the royalties from that it really is a silly of state of affairs. Oh and whilst I am on my high horse eBooks attract VAT so the gov gets 20% and at the same time paper books destroy trees and don't attract VAT weird yes?
Sorry about going on but it really is one of those things (apart from politicians) that really get up my nose:(
What you are forgetting is that the fixed costs are all the same between e-books and printed books (apart from the print and physical distribution costs per copy). Royalties, editing, design, artwork, typesetting, file conversion, electronic distribution etc. Probably about 70% of the actual unit cost.
But I would agree with you on the VAT issue, it's an absurd anomaly, and it doesn't happen elsewhere in Europe. No free lunch, and no free laptop
