I'd say listen to her. I know you probably want to surprise her so try to bring subjects up eg 'Martin from work is talking about going to New York' and see if she sounds enthusiastic. I know for me if DH booked a weekend in NY I'd actually be a bit p****d off, I'd far rather plan it, put some extra cash towards it together and go for a few weeks. But then I'm definitely not a surprise hop on a plane type of person. In the end it might be that she would love to have your house repainted (I know a friend who insisted on that for her 40th and still thinks it's a gift that keeps on giving!) Or indeed she might like the jewellery option. The other possibility is to try asking one of her friends or workmates to do a bit of detective work on your behalf or see what they think.

It's lovely you want to do this for her!

You could consider a fantastic surprise party at a nice venue.

Apart from jewellery, what does she like?

Designer clothes and shoes? A pair of Jimmy Choos maybe

Music? A trip to the Vienna State Opera or whatever she likes.

Sports? Tickets to the Wimbledon Final/FA Cup Final or whatever.

Travel? Whale watching in Canada. Safari in Africa.

Or maybe you could give her a divorce. No, hang on, you only have £500. Nowhere near enough. :D

Knowing my passion for bags, hubby bought me a Mulberry handbag for my 40th. There's some really lovely ones in the new collection which fit nicely into your price range.

I will be 40 next year and I would absolutely love to be given a really lovely comfortable luxurious sun lounger (or pair - so that my husband can relax next to me)........but maybe that's just me!

For my husband's 40th a couple of years ago I booked a 'surprise' short break in Tunisia. We could only do 4 nights as it was a nightmare to make childcare arrangements, but it was a fantastic treat for us both. Great to have some child-free evenings.....nights.....mornings.....afternoons......if you know what I mean - a birthday treat indeed!!!

    Holiday holiday holiday!!!! Lol.

And maybe something that she can keep as a momento of the occassion.

The idea of a party is a good one, if shes a party person. Ive never had a surprise party and would love one personally!

Why not get her something more memorable than just material goods. A trip back to where you first met or maybe a visit to where you spent your honeymoon? If she's already "dripping in jewellery" then another load isn't really going to be that significant.

What about something like getting a professional portrait taken? Although some can be absolute tat there are others out there who take superb pictures! Or maybe dig out an old photo of you both when you first met, get it retouched and buy a nice frame for it.

Why not make her a CD of her favourite songs or songs from your wedding? I made my wife a compilation CD for Christmas and she loved it, I also made her some laminated massage vouchers that she could redeem with me!

Personally I think that she'll be more impressed in the long run if you get/make her something that shows that you've put genuine thought into it rather than just nipping down to H Samuels!
  • You are obviously such a lovely caring husband, that she's probably just content to spend time with you!

Whatever you choose, well done on being such a Gent!

Listen to what she is saying and if she is hinting at anything and you pick up on it then the present will be priceless.....

We were going to go to Venice but never got there in the end, or Paris, has to be something romantic, memory lasting and just for the two of you...

    know your woman!

I would hate a holiday etc I want something I can unwrap and that's a 'thing' or even better several 'things' :rotfl:

Handbags are a good idea but again know what she wants - Tods bags are great and there are discount places at Bicester Village and the like (and a Mulberry outlet). Personally I wouldn't want a bag that screams a certain designer but many women do. A great pair of shoes could also go down well if that's her thing but again hard to get right. Anything that makes her feel like a sexy woman would go down well - don't be scared of lingerie but buy classy not slutty and make it a small part of the pressie so she doesn't think that the pressie's really for you ;)

I dunno give us more of an idea of the kind of thing she likes.

I'm one of the ladies who would want a lovely handbag of much gorgeousness!!! :D Not necessarily something that shouted the designer, but a beautiful, well made thing at the sort of price that would ordinarily make me say, "How much? For a handbag??!! "
