reducing the size of a photo

I'm sure this has been asked before but a quick search hasn't found anything, so apols.

How do I reduce the size of a photo so I can upload it to a website (for an avatar :dance:)

Thanks

Miss H

The most likely way is to reduce the DPI

Irfanview can do that, the plug ins are useful

    http://www.irfanview.com/

Open the image with irfanview, click image at the top, then image resize, at the bottom there is a box with the current DPI figure, set it to 100, click OK

You can also reduce the dimensions there but for this, the DPI figure is likely making the picture too large for a web page with size limits

You reduce the size of it with picture-editing software that has a 'resize' function.

If you don't have any already (look through Programs on your Start Menu), download ACDSee or Fotosizer, or google

    'free download photo resize'

    or similar search terms
  • Go to http://sqi.sh/images

Upload the picture, then 'sqish' it leaving it on the default setting of '100px wide thumb - Mostly useful for making forum avatars.'

This will then automatically create a unique url for your avatar so you'll be killing two birds with one stone.

I agree with Irfanview and using resize but changing the DPI won't actually change anything because DPI is a function of the print size, not the actual image. For example if you print the same image on 6x4, 10x8 and 30x20 the DPI will be different for each one as it will be much higher on the 6x4 than the 30x20 (assuming the printer can print high enough).

If you have Windows 7, open 'Paint', load the picture then select 'resize' (or CTRL + W) from the 'home' menu.

True, DPI is pretty much only for printing purposes.

When we mention 'size', there are 2 types of 'size'. The physical dimensions (eg. 30x30) and the actual file size (eg. 4MB)

In the same vein, the image may be in RGB format, converting to CMYK will vastly reduce the image size. Although simply resizing may solve the problem, it may not actually do anything at all. If the problem is the 'size' of the file is too big (again eg. 4MB) then and the image is in RGB then you could shrink it right down to 2x2 and potentially it could still be too big!

Although this is unlikely so try resizing the dimensions first and take it from there.

If it's just the one picture, and then only occasionally, use Paint which comes free with Windows.

Select "Image", then "Resize/Skew". Reduce the image size with "Image" > "Attributes.

Save it as JPG or even GIF formats.

To do a number at one go then I find IrfanView to be an excellent product.
